Chapter 20 - The File Michael FearedMichael was being held in federal detention pending his plea hearing.

Daniel brought the photograph.
Michael saw the symbol.
His face changed instantly.
“No.”
Daniel sat.
“You recognize it.”
“Yes.”
“What is it?”
Michael looked toward the guard.
Then leaned closer.
“Northstar had a predecessor.”
Daniel frowned.
“Dad was involved?”
“Maybe.”
“What was it called?”
“Harbor.”
Daniel waited.
Michael continued.
“Northstar collected information.”
“And Harbor?”
“Changed identities.”
Daniel felt cold.
“Witness protection?”
“Unofficially.”
“What does that mean?”
“People who needed to disappear.”
“Criminals?”
“Sometimes.”
“Agents?”
“Yes.”
“Children?”
Michael looked away.
Daniel’s pulse increased.
“Children?”
“Yes.”
“What does this have to do with Evan?”
“I don’t know.”
“Stop.”
Michael looked at him.
“You always say that before another lie.”
Michael flinched.
Daniel placed the photograph flat on the table.
“Who is the third man?”
Michael stared.
“Dr. Nathan Cole.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Cole.
The fake surname Ryan had used when entering the station.
“What did he do?”
“Identity reconstruction.”
Daniel frowned.
“That sounds fake.”
“It means documents.”
“Birth certificates?”
“Yes.”
“Hospital records?”
“Yes.”
Daniel understood.
Evan’s altered identity.
Sarah’s fake death.
Steven Pike.
Michael’s death.
All roads led backward.
“Where is Cole?”
“Supposedly dead.”
Daniel laughed.
“Of course he is.”
Michael almost smiled.
Daniel continued.
“Did Ryan know him?”
“I don’t know.”
“He used the name Ryan Cole.”
Michael stared.
“That wasn’t random.”
“No.”
Daniel found Ryan in county detention.
Ryan listened.
Then lowered his eyes.
“Nathan Cole was my godfather.”
Daniel froze.
“Your father’s friend?”
“Yes.”
“What happened to him?”
“He disappeared when I was ten.”
“Did William ever talk about Harbor?”
Ryan’s expression changed.
“Once.”
“What did he say?”
“That Harbor was the reason Northstar had to exist.”
Daniel frowned.
“Meaning?”
“I thought he was drunk.”
“What did he say?”
Ryan leaned back.
“He said Harbor taught him people don’t need to be killed.”
Daniel waited.
Ryan continued.
“You can erase someone just as completely by changing who the world believes they are.”
Daniel felt a chill.
“How many?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Why use Cole’s surname at the station?”
Ryan gave a tired smile.
“Because when you’re living inside lies long enough, sometimes you choose one that means something.”
No operational significance.
Just grief.
Daniel returned to Michael’s cabin.
The file marked DO NOT OPEN was gone.
Of course.
But Daniel remembered Michael’s systems.
Nothing important existed once.
Behind a loose panel under Evan’s bed, he found a backup drive.
The Harbor directory contained seventeen cases.
Most involved adults.
One involved an infant.
CASE 17.
Daniel opened it.
Birth date.
Eight years earlier.
St. Matthew’s Hospital.
His pulse changed.
Subject: Male infant.
Birth mother: Sarah Mercer.
Biological father: Daniel Reed.
Daniel stared.
“Evan.”
But the next line made no sense.
STATUS: REPLACEMENT IDENTITY COMPLETED.
Daniel frowned.
Evan had grown up as Evan Reed under Michael’s care.
What replacement identity?
He scrolled.
Original infant designation:
BABY A.
Second infant:
BABY B.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Twins.
Sarah had given birth to twins.
He read again.
Two boys.
One left the hospital with Sarah.
One transferred under a fabricated adoption record.
Daniel stumbled backward.
Evan had a twin brother.
No one had told him.
Not Michael.
Not Sarah.
Maybe Michael never knew.
Daniel called Sarah.
She answered.
“Daniel?”
“Did you have twins?”
Silence.
His heart dropped.
“Sarah.”
She began crying.
“Where did you hear that?”
“Harbor.”
“No.”
“Did you have twins?”
“Yes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Where is the other boy?”
“I don’t know.”
“You let me believe—”
“I was told he died.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“He didn’t.”
Sarah stopped breathing.
“What?”
“He was given another identity.”
“No.”
“He survived.”
Sarah began sobbing.
Daniel looked at the file.
The adoption trail ended with a sealed court order.
County Family Court.
Signed by Judge Leonard Price.
One of the retired judges on Northstar’s payoff list.
Daniel accessed the unsealed federal copy.
Adoptive parents:
MARK AND JULIA BENNETT.
Child renamed:
NOAH BENNETT.
Daniel stared at the address.
Only forty minutes away.
His son.
Evan’s twin brother.
Had been living less than an hour from him for eight years.
Then he saw a recent note attached to the federal file.
The Bennett family had reported Noah missing.
Twenty-three days ago.
The same day Ryan kidnapped Evan.
Daniel’s blood turned cold.
Two boys had disappeared on the same night.
Only one had escaped.
He called Marcus.
“Get me everything on Noah Bennett.”
Marcus heard Daniel’s voice.
“What happened?”
May you like
Daniel looked at Evan’s photograph beside the computer.
“Evan wasn’t the only child they were after.”
