Chapter 9 - The Boy Who Escaped TwiceEvan had stolen Daniel’s spare phone.

The location history showed movement north.
Toward Millbrook.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“He heard us.”
Lisa nodded.
“He must have listened when you talked about the facility.”
Marcus cursed.
Keller looked almost impressed.
“Michael trained him well.”
Daniel turned on him.
“He’s eight.”
Keller looked away.
They located a bus camera showing Evan boarding alone.
Barefoot again.
Daniel’s chest tightened.
The boy had escaped a kidnapper.
Then escaped police protection.
All because the adults around him kept hiding the truth.
Marcus drove.
Daniel called every transit officer they trusted.
No uniforms at the facility.
No radio broadcast.
Quiet perimeter only.
They reached Millbrook after midnight.
Northstar’s abandoned operations building sat behind a rusted fence.
Evan’s stolen phone was inside.
Daniel entered through a side door.
No lights.
Concrete hallway.
He heard voices ahead.
Ryan.
“You shouldn’t have come.”
Evan answered.
“I want my dad.”
Daniel stopped.
Marcus grabbed his shoulder.
They moved quietly toward the sound.
Through a cracked doorway, Daniel saw Michael for the first time in nine years.
Tied to a chair.
Bruised.
Alive.
Evan stood between him and Ryan.
Ryan held no weapon.
Two other men stood nearby.
Daniel recognized neither.
Evan stared at Michael.
“Did you kill my mom?”
Michael’s face collapsed.
“Evan…”
“Answer me.”
Ryan watched.
Daniel’s chest ached.
Michael whispered, “Yes.”
Evan stumbled backward.
“No.”
“It was an accident.”
“You said she died in a car.”
Michael’s eyes filled.
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“To protect you.”
Evan shouted, “Everybody says that!”
Daniel almost moved.
Marcus held him.
Wait.
Michael continued.
“Your mother discovered things that put you in danger.”
“Ryan says you framed my real dad.”
Michael looked at Ryan.
Then back at Evan.
“David Mercer raised you for six weeks.”
Ryan froze.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
Michael continued.
“But he wasn’t your biological father.”
Evan’s face crumpled.
“Then who is?”
Michael looked toward the floor.
“I don’t know.”
Ryan stepped forward.
“You’re lying.”
“I’m not.”
“Sarah told David he was the father.”
“She lied to him.”
Ryan grabbed Michael’s shirt.
“You destroyed him.”
“Yes.”
Ryan stopped.
Michael didn’t defend himself.
“I helped frame David.”
Michael’s voice cracked.
“I deserve everything you think I deserve.”
Ryan stared.
“But Evan doesn’t.”
Daniel watched Ryan’s expression shift.
Michael continued.
“Sarah learned who Evan’s biological father was shortly before she died.”
Ryan’s grip loosened.
“Who?”
“She never told me.”
“Then what is the wristband?”
Michael looked at Evan.
“A clue.”
Daniel’s pulse jumped.
“What clue?”
Michael’s eyes moved toward the doorway.
Directly toward Daniel.
For one impossible second, Daniel wondered if his brother could see him in the dark.
Michael said:
“Evan’s original hospital record was altered.”
Ryan frowned.
“By Northstar?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Michael’s voice lowered.
“Because his biological father was somebody important.”
One of Ryan’s men shifted.
“What kind of important?”
Michael answered:
“The kind who could destroy Northstar if he knew he had a son.”
Daniel felt a chill.
Ryan stared at the boy.
“Who?”
Michael shook his head.
“I only know the initials.”
“What initials?”
Michael looked at Evan.
“D.R.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Marcus slowly turned toward him.
Ryan frowned.
“D.R.?”
Michael closed his eyes.
Daniel’s mind rejected it.
No.
Impossible.
Michael continued.
“Sarah told me Evan’s father was a police officer.”
Daniel felt the floor disappear beneath him.
Eight years ago.
Daniel was thirty.
He had dated a woman named Sarah for three months.
Sarah Collins.
Not Mercer.
She had vanished after ending the relationship abruptly.
Daniel had never known she was married.
Never known her real surname.
Marcus whispered, “Daniel…”
Ryan’s face changed.
He understood.
He looked toward the door.
“Come out, Officer Reed.”
Daniel stepped into the light.
Michael’s face went white.
“Danny.”
Evan turned.
Daniel looked at the boy.
Brown hair.
Same slight dimple their mother had.
Same hazel eyes Daniel saw every morning in the mirror.
Evan stared at him.
“What does D.R. mean?”
No one answered.
The boy looked from Michael to Daniel.
May you like
Then whispered:
“Are you my dad?”
