THE BOY WHO REFUSED TO LET GO / Chapter 10 / 25

Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN GRAHAM ERASEDIsabella returned under federal protection.

Vincent was not allowed to meet her alone.

He had admitted enough crimes to make every relationship subject to legal scrutiny.

Their reunion occurred inside a hospital conference room.

Ruby entered first.

Isabella stared at the six-year-old girl in the pale-pink dress that had been cleaned and repaired after the balcony.

“You’re bigger,” she whispered.

Ruby stopped several feet away.

Her mother looked different from the framed photographs.

Thinner.

Older.

Frightened.

“Are you Mommy?”

“I think so.”

Ruby began crying.

Isabella did not reach for her without permission.

“May I hold you?”

Ruby crossed the room.

Their embrace lasted so long that even Naomi turned away.

Vincent waited outside.

When Isabella finally agreed to see him, he entered without his suit jacket.

For the first time, he looked uncertain where to place his hands.

“I buried you.”

“I know.”

“I killed people because Graham told me they took you.”

Isabella’s face tightened.

“That was your choice.”

Vincent lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

“You believed violence proved love.”

“Yes.”

“It only gave Graham cover.”

“I know.”

She looked at him for a long time.

“Do you?”

There was no instant reconciliation.

No cinematic kiss.

Isabella had survived captivity.

Vincent had answered her supposed death by creating more widows.

Love remained.

So did accountability.

She agreed to help investigators recover memories without promising him a marriage.

Vincent accepted.

That was the beginning of his change.

Not receiving forgiveness.

Respecting its absence.

Isabella remembered the balcony plot when shown Graham’s photograph.

He visited her six weeks earlier.

He brought a picture of Ruby.

“She will join you soon,” he said.

At the time, Isabella believed he meant a visit.

Now she understood.

Graham planned to kill Ruby, then bring proof to Isabella.

Why keep Isabella alive?

Because her fingerprints unlocked an offshore account containing evidence and money.

Graham needed her memory restored.

The account held funds stolen from Vincent, rival families and corrupt officials.

More importantly, it contained names.

Judges.

Police officers.

Politicians.

Doctors.

Graham could not access it without Isabella’s biometric approval and a phrase she selected years earlier.

He tortured her memory with photographs.

He still failed.

Ruby’s near-death was intended to break her.

If Isabella believed her daughter dead, Graham expected despair to loosen the phrase.

Vincent’s fury returned.

But now it had nowhere lawful to strike.

He gave Naomi every account he controlled.

Every safe house.

Every loyal gunman.

Not all cooperated.

Some abandoned him.

Others threatened Ruby.

Vincent entered protective custody pending formal charges.

The great Moretti organization fractured within days.

Graham released another message.

This time, he addressed Vincent directly.

“You surrendered an empire for a housekeeper’s son.”

Vincent watched it beside Mateo.

“No,” he said. “I surrendered it because it made men like you possible.”

Graham smiled on the recording.

“Then let us see what remains when your name protects no one.”

A live camera feed appeared.

It showed Elena inside the Moretti basement apartment.

She had returned with agents to recover clothing.

Now she sat bound to a chair.

Behind her stood one of the officers assigned to protect her.

A corrupt officer.

Graham stepped into view and held Rafael’s damaged phone.

“Bring Isabella to the estate before midnight,” he said. “Or Mateo loses the parent he has left.”

Mateo saw the screen.

May you like

His serious brown eyes filled with terror.

This time, Elena was the one hanging over the edge.
