THE BOY WHO REFUSED TO LET GO / Chapter 13 / 25

Chapter 13 - RUBY REMEMBERED THE HANDRuby began waking at 9:16 every night.

Not morning.

Not afternoon.

Her body remembered the numbers without understanding the clock.

She dreamed of a hand pushing the railing.

Everyone believed the metal failed beneath her weight.

Ruby remembered something else.

A black sleeve behind her.

A hand touching her back.

The memory surfaced during therapy.

“Did Mr. Pike push you?” the counselor asked.

Ruby shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“Whose hand was it?”

“It had a ring.”

Graham wore a silver ring.

But so did dozens of guards.

Ruby drew it.

A square black stone.

Vincent recognized the design.

The ring belonged to Dominic Moretti.

After Dominic’s official death, Graham began wearing his plain silver band.

Not the square black ring.

The balcony attacker might not have been Graham.

Naomi reexamined the French-door reflection.

The hand holding the saw wore Graham’s silver band.

He cut the support.

But someone else may have pushed Ruby.

Dominic was declared dead eighteen months earlier.

His body was identified by Graham.

No independent family member viewed it.

Isabella saw his photograph.

“He’s alive.”

Vincent stared at her.

“You’re certain?”

“He visited the care home.”

Dominic faked his death after helping Graham control Isabella.

He remained the hidden partner.

The plan to kill Ruby was not only about Graham’s escape.

If Vincent and Ruby died or disappeared, Dominic could claim control over Moretti assets through family succession.

Ruby survived because Mateo reached her before Dominic expected anyone nearby.

Security footage from a garden camera showed a dark-haired man leaving the balcony corridor moments after the fall.

His face remained hidden.

A square black ring flashed as he opened a door.

Vincent’s betrayal became personal in a different way.

His brother did not merely help kill Isabella.

He placed a hand behind Ruby.

“He touched my daughter,” Vincent said.

His voice held the old promise of blood.

Isabella faced him.

“What will you do?”

Vincent looked at Naomi.

“I will testify.”

“What do you want to do?”

“Kill him.”

Ruby heard from the hallway.

“Don’t.”

Vincent turned.

She stood beside Mateo.

“If you kill Uncle Dominic, do you go away?”

“Yes.”

“If you don’t, do you still go away?”

“Probably.”

“Then why not make one less dead person?”

No one in Vincent’s old world would have asked the question that simply.

Dominic released a message that evening.

He accused Graham of acting alone.

He offered to return Isabella in exchange for immunity, unaware she had already been found.

Naomi traced the transmission to a Moretti safe house in Rhode Island.

Agents raided it.

Dominic escaped through a boat tunnel.

Inside, they found passports for Graham, Dominic and two children.

Ruby Moretti.

Mateo Cruz.

Graham intended to abduct both.

Ruby gave access to Vincent.

Mateo gave access to Rafael’s hidden evidence.

The children were not targets to be eliminated anymore.

They were keys.
