THE BOY WHO REFUSED TO LET GO / Chapter 19 / 25

Chapter 19 - THE TRIAL OF THE CUT RAILINGGraham and Dominic were tried together.

The prosecution placed the broken railing support before the jury.

The cut remained visible beneath laboratory light.

A metallurgist explained how Graham weakened it enough to appear stable until weight moved outward.

Ruby’s black shoe was displayed beside it.

So was the white pigeon feather.

Ordinary objects became a map of intent.

Graham’s attorney attacked Mateo.

Why was a staff child upstairs?

Why did he keep the brass key?

Why did he touch the evidence?

The questions tried to make childhood behavior more suspicious than adult conspiracy.

Mateo answered through recorded testimony.

“I was bringing towels.”

“I picked up the key because Mr. Pike dropped it.”

“I touched the railing because Ruby was falling.”

The attorney asked:

“Did you ever dislike Ruby because she lived in a large house?”

Mateo frowned.

“I disliked that she had a movie room and didn’t know how to use the remote.”

Laughter moved through the courtroom.

The judge silenced it.

Mateo continued.

“But I didn’t want her dead.”

The simplicity destroyed the insinuation.

Ruby testified about the feather and Dominic’s hand.

She cried once.

The judge paused the session.

No one called the tears unreliability.

Children could be frightened and truthful at the same time.

Elena testified about Rafael.

Isabella testified about eleven months of captivity.

Vincent testified under guard.

He admitted his crimes before describing theirs.

That strengthened his credibility.

He did not present himself as an innocent king betrayed by servants.

He presented evidence as a guilty man finally refusing another lie.

The jury convicted Graham and Dominic on every major charge.

Graham received multiple life sentences.

Dominic received life without parole.

Neither controlled the final narrative.
