THE BOY WHO REFUSED TO LET GO / Chapter 15 / 25

Chapter 15 - RETURN TO THE BALCONYFederal agents surrounded the Moretti estate before dawn.

The damaged railing remained behind crime-scene tape.

Ruby’s black shoe still rested in evidence, not on the terrace.

A duplicate was placed below to make the scene appear untouched.

Vincent stood inside the drawing room wearing a recording device.

Naomi objected to his involvement.

Dominic would not appear unless he saw his brother.

Elena remained at the command post with the children.

Mateo watched the balcony camera.

His scraped hands had begun healing.

Bandages still covered his right forearm.

At 9:09, Graham entered through the garden tunnel.

At 9:11, Dominic arrived through the old garage.

Neither knew the other was present.

Vincent stepped onto the balcony at 9:14.

Cold November wind moved his dark hair and open collar.

Graham emerged first.

Black suit.

Earpiece.

No weapon visible.

“You surrendered too quickly,” he said.

“You cut my daughter’s railing.”

“You built a life where cutting metal was easier than confronting you.”

“That explains opportunity. Not choice.”

Graham smiled.

“You sound like Elena.”

“She is right.”

Dominic appeared behind the French doors.

A black-stone ring marked his hand.

“Where is Isabella?”

Vincent faced his brother.

“Safe.”

Dominic’s expression changed.

Graham turned.

“You said she was still at the home.”

“She was when I checked.”

They looked at one another.

Years of partnership collapsed in one glance.

Each realized the other had failed.

Graham drew a weapon.

Dominic drew first.

Vincent dropped behind a stone planter.

Agents waited for a clear shot.

Dominic fired.

The bullet struck the wrought-iron railing.

Metal rang.

The same support Mateo used to hold Ruby shook again.

At the command center, Ruby screamed.

Mateo covered her eyes.

“Don’t look.”

On the balcony, Graham fired toward Dominic.

Vincent moved between the doors and the line of fire.

Not to protect either man.

To keep bullets from entering the house where agents stood.

Naomi ordered the team forward.

Dominic grabbed Vincent around the neck.

A gun pressed against his ribs.

“Tell them to back away.”

Vincent looked toward the balcony camera.

Ruby could see him.

His old instincts demanded violence.

His daughter needed him alive and accountable.

He lifted both hands.

“I won’t help you escape.”

Dominic pulled him toward the broken section.

“You gave up the family.”

“No. You confused the family with everything that poisoned it.”

Graham tried to move behind them.

Dominic fired without looking.

The shot struck Graham’s shoulder.

He fell.

Agents rushed the balcony.

Dominic dragged Vincent toward the edge.

The partially repaired support failed.

Both men slipped.

Vincent caught the stone ledge with one hand.

Dominic hung from Vincent’s other wrist.

The image mirrored Mateo and Ruby.

Twenty-three feet above the terrace.

Dominic looked down.

“Pull me up.”

Vincent’s injured grip weakened.

He could release his brother.

Call it an accident.

End the threat.

For one second, everyone watching believed he might.

Then Mateo’s voice came through the balcony speaker.

“Don’t let go.”

Vincent looked toward the camera.

The seven-year-old boy who saved Ruby now asked him to save the man who pushed her.

Not because Dominic deserved mercy.

Because Vincent needed to remain someone Ruby could recognize.

Vincent tightened his grip.

Agents pulled both brothers over the edge.

Dominic was handcuffed.

Graham lay bleeding but conscious.

Elena exhaled for the first time in what felt like minutes.

Ruby looked at Mateo.

“Why did you tell Daddy to hold him?”

May you like

Mateo’s answer was simple.

“Because letting someone fall changes you too.”
