His texts showed.
At same time, honeymoon to Italy with Claire.
Dates overlapped.
Claire would return from honeymoon June 18.
Elena shower June 22.
He could have done.
Then baby due July.
What then?
Adrian said he intended confess after fund closing.
To whom first?
“I don’t know.”
Again.
Elena laughed:
“You had calendar.”
Indeed.
He scheduled two lives.
Elena canceled shower because humiliating.
Monica insisted on smaller.
Hospital colleagues hosted in community room.
Claire did not attend first because worried presence media/awkward.
Elena invited.
“I want you there.”
Claire hesitated.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Claire came quietly, brought no extravagant gift.
Books.
Elena smiled.
“Good. No gold stroller.”
Claire laughed.
They had developed humor.
Elena named daughter Grace Marie Hart.
Not Sophie.
Why Grace:
she wanted something chosen after truth.
Adrian objected to surname Hart? As father he requested Whitmore maybe. Legal birth naming is mother choice depending; they negotiated later. Grace Hart-Whitmore? Elena decided Grace Hart, Adrian can petition maybe. To avoid conflict, she chooses Grace Hart; Adrian doesn't get automatic naming control.
He asked middle Sophie.
Elena declined.
Boundaries.
Claire learned she was not pregnant—maybe she had planned children with Adrian. The existence of Grace triggered grief for imagined future.
She admitted therapist:
“I envy her baby and hate myself.”
Therapist:
“Feeling isn't action.”
Claire never told Elena at first.
Later months, Elena sensed.
They discussed.
“Sometimes looking at Grace reminds me he gave you something real.”
Elena:
“And sometimes looking at your life reminds me he wanted you more publicly.”
They stared.
Then laughed sadly.
Both comparing.
They agreed stop.
Adrian had already done enough.
Their friendship survived because allowed uncomfortable truths.
No saintly women.
At shower, a guest asked how Claire and Elena met.
Awkward.
Monica:
“Long story.”
Laughter.
Privacy.
Adrian not invited.
He sent gift through attorney:
expensive stroller.
Elena returned.
Not because deny father, but he had not yet begun structured relationship and gift felt performance.
Later she accepted child support and practical items through plan.
No grand gestures.
Diane Whitmore attended future visitation maybe.
Grace birth coming.
The shower that never happened as Adrian planned became something better: community without lie.
No wedding wealth.
No secret father.
Elena's life not destroyed.
She returned eventually nursing.
