Then accepted one session for closure.
Neutral office.
Adrian looked different.
Less polished.
No watch.
“Thank you.”
Claire:
“Don’t waste.”
He nodded.
“I lied because I wanted incompatible lives.”
“Why?”
“With you, I felt like I had arrived.”
Claire flinched.
He continued:
“With Elena, I felt like I didn’t have to perform.”
“That sounds insulting to both.”
“It is.”
He swallowed.
“I told myself I loved both, so no one was being used.”
“But love doesn’t cancel use.”
Claire looked.
Good sentence.
He continued:
“I expected Beaumont investment.”
“I shouldn’t.”
“I used engagement to create credibility.”
“I thought once fund launched, I would tell truth and accept whatever.”
Claire:
“You were willing marry me before truth.”
“Yes.”
“And Elena eight months pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“What outcome did you imagine?”
Adrian stared at floor.
“I kept imagining future version of myself brave enough.”
Claire laughed sadly.
“He never showed.”
“No.”
Then:
“I am sorry.”
Claire:
“I believe you are sorry.”
He looked hopeful.
“That doesn’t restore.”
“I know.”
“Do you understand I may never forgive?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
He asked:
“Did you ever love me?”
Claire's eyes filled.
“Yes.”
He closed eyes.
“That's hardest.”
“No.”
Claire corrected.
“Hardest was realizing love wasn't enough to make you safe.”
He nodded.
She left.
No hug.
No second chance.

“Your apology is behavior around Grace.”
He accepted.
