Chapter 17 - GRACE ARRIVES EARLYAt thirty-six weeks, Elena went into labor.

Not at wedding.
Weeks later.
Stress may contribute but doctors did not speculate irresponsibly.
Monica drove.
Elena called Diane Whitmore because Adrian under legal/counsel? She debated.
Ultimately her attorney/co-parenting agreement allowed notification.
Adrian came hospital.
Elena allowed him in after birth, not delivery.
Claire did not attend; this was family moment.
Grace was small but healthy.
Six pounds.
Brown hair.
Adrian entered postpartum room.
He cried.
Elena watched carefully.
He touched baby's hand.
“She’s beautiful.”
“Yes.”
“Can I hold?”
Elena paused.
Then nodded.
Nurse present.
He held daughter.
For perhaps first time in months, Adrian had no argument.
No persuasion.
Just baby.
He whispered:
“Hi, Grace.”
He accepted name.
That mattered.
He cried.
Elena felt conflicting:
love she once had.
rage.
pity.
She did not reconcile.
A man can feel genuine love child and still be terrible partner.
After ten minutes, Adrian said:
“I’m sorry.”
Elena:
“Not today.”
Good.
He stopped.
He visited according plan.
Initially supervised? Because no violence toward child, but instability/media. Perhaps structured hospital and then short visits with Elena/neutral center until trust.
He paid support.
No using baby to reach Elena.
His therapist/court mediator established.
Diane became grandmother.
Elena liked her cautiously.
Claire sent flowers? Maybe too connected. She sent card and books later.
Welcome, Grace. Your mom is brave.
Elena cried.
No huge gift.
Adrian wanted name on birth certificate; yes paternity established, he is father.
Grace Hart.
He later petitioned hyphen? Decided not worth battle.
He said:
“I want her know she’s Whitmore.”
Mediator:
“She can know without surname.”
He accepted eventually.
Growth small.
Meanwhile professional inquiry ongoing.
Grace's arrival forced Adrian see consequences not abstract.
He now had daughter whose first months occurred amid scandal.
He couldn't erase.
He told therapist:
“I thought I could fix after wedding.”
“What was fix?”
“I don’t know.”
Same.
Therapist challenged future avoidance.
Adrian started accountability.
Not redemption yet.
Claire heard he was attending.
She felt nothing.
Good.
Her life moved.
She joined Beaumont expansion deal.
No romantic interest.
No need new man ending.
Elena returned home.
At night feeding Grace, she thought about wedding.
If she hadn't gone, she might still await Adrian “business trip.”
Grace perhaps born into secret.
That was chilling.
Now painful truth but clear.
She preferred.
Grace arrived not as punishment to Adrian or reward Elena.
May you like
Just child.
Adults responsible.
