Chapter 16 - THE FATHER OF THE BRIDEWilliam Beaumont had disliked Adrian before.

Not enough to forbid.
He found him polished.
Too attentive to power.
Claire accused father class prejudice.
William backed off.
After wedding, he struggled not to say:
“I knew.”
He never.
Claire noticed.
“Say it.”
“What?”
“You told me.”
William:
“I had concerns.”
“You were right.”
“Not about everything.”
He sat.
“I thought he was ambitious around Beaumont money.”
“I did not know pregnant woman existed.”
Claire cried.
“I should have listened.”
William shook.
“No.”
“You had right choose.”
“My job was give information, not make choice.”
This mattered.
Unlike controlling fathers.
He respected adult daughter.
Then he admitted failure:
Adrian had met William privately six months earlier seeking informal endorsement for WSP fund.
William said no.
Adrian asked him not tell Claire because “didn't want business interfere engagement.”
William agreed? He told Claire vaguely Adrian asked investment? Actually if he concealed, problematic.
William said:
“I told him absolutely not and assumed he would disclose.”
Claire stared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I thought it was his business pitch, not relationship.”
“You should.”
“Yes.”
He owned.
This becomes clue:
Adrian knew William opposed, thus prenup route.
William produced email:
I will not allocate Beaumont capital to family member’s fund without full independent committee. Do not treat relationship with Claire as financial endorsement.
Adrian had that before investor emails.
Strong regulatory evidence.
William’s guilt.
Claire:
“You don’t get to decide my business by hiding either.”
He nodded.
Pattern again.
Even protective silence can harm.
They established:
No side conversations about her partner.
Direct.
William later testified.
He did not use power to crush Adrian beyond factual.
When investors asked blacklisting, William said:
“Make your own decisions.”
Beaumont stopped dealings.
No whisper campaign.
Claire respected.
At a later charity event, William apologized to Elena personally.
“My hotel became scene.”
Elena:
“You didn’t cause.”
“No. But I’m sorry.”
He also offered no money.
Just respect.
Good.
The father of bride could have become revenge engine.
Instead he modeled accountability.
He told Claire:
“I could make phone calls and ensure Adrian never works in Boston again.”
Claire:
“Don’t.”
“I won’t.”
“Why say?”
“Because I’m angry.”
They laughed slightly.
He learned.
Consequences must arise from actions, not Beaumont influence.
This preserved Claire agency and avoids power fantasy too cartoon.
Adrian later complained Beaumont family used regulators.
Records showed inquiry triggered investor complaint, not William.
