Chapter 13 - WESLEY’S PRIVATE FILENadia discovered Wesley’s private file because he handed it to her.

That mattered.

He arrived at Elise’s townhouse carrying a black binder.

“I need you to see.”

Nadia looked.

“What?”

“Everything I kept.”

Inside:

DNA ancestry printout from age twenty-nine.

Emails with Kline.

Notes from private genetics consultant.

Screenshot of June match.

Journal pages.

Wesley had been investigating secretly far more than he admitted.

Nadia’s anger returned.

“Last year only?”

He looked ashamed.

“No.”

“How long?”

“Since before June.”

She stared.

“What?”

At thirty-one, before Nadia and Wesley began fertility treatment, Wesley had consulted independent geneticist because his own infertility and Kline parentage.

He asked whether his condition inherited.

Kline had normal fertility obviously.

No clear.

The consultant suggested donor conception could avoid unknown risks.

Wesley kept.

When he and Nadia chose donor, he wanted anonymity partly to separate from Kline line.

That made Priscilla’s substitution especially cruel.

“You deliberately chose unrelated donor.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t tell me?”

“I would have had to explain Kline.”

“You could.”

“I know.”

He cried.

The file included email Wesley sent Kline two months before first treatment:

I know who you are biologically. Do not involve yourself in our donor selection beyond standard care.

Nadia stopped.

“You told him.”

“Yes.”

“Kline knew you did not want genetic connection.”

“Yes.”

This strengthened intent.

Kline replied:

Your treatment will follow clinic protocols. I respect your boundaries.

A lie.

Nadia sat.

“Why hide this email?”

“Because it proves I knew risk and still took us to his clinic.”

“Why did you?”

“Mother pushed.”

“Kline had excellent success rates.”

“I thought explicit boundary enough.”

“And I didn’t want tell you why another clinic.”

Nadia:

“You let secrecy keep us in dangerous place.”

“Yes.”

This was painful.

Not malicious.

Consequential.

The file also showed after June age two, Wesley had run private DNA comparison using discarded? How did he get June sample without Nadia? Perhaps pediatric lab residual impossible. Better he uploaded June's raw genetic data from pediatric test after both parents consented to testing but Nadia didn't know he downloaded and compared. He had portal access. This is ethically problematic but legal parent.

At age four, he compared.

24.7%.

So he knew two years before current clinic call, not one year.

Nadia stared.

“You said last year.”

“I lied.”

“Why now?”

“Because I cannot ask Mother truth while giving you partial.”

Good but still hurt.

She stood.

“Two years.”

“Yes.”

“You tucked her in knowing.”

“Yes.”

“You let me tell donor stories that were false.”

“Yes.”

He sobbed.

“I’m sorry.”

Nadia walked into kitchen.

Elise saw face, took June to park without questions.

Nadia returned.

“Why didn’t you confront Priscilla then?”

“I did indirectly.”

“I asked if Kline could be donor.”

“She said impossible.”

“I wanted believe.”

“Why not clinic?”

“I emailed Kline.”

“He said relationships can appear due pedigree collapse? Ridiculous.”

“He told me consumer DNA unreliable.”

“And you accepted?”

“I ordered clinical?”

He had not.

“I was afraid.”

Nadia:

“You keep using fear.”

“I know.”

“Fear explains delay.”

“Two years of active deception is still choice.”

“Yes.”

He did not argue.

The file gave evidence but damaged marriage anew.

Nadia told couples therapist:

“I was starting to trust.”

Wesley:

“I knew if later discovered file, worse.”

“So confession now self-protection?”

“Partly.”

“Also I don’t want lie.”

Both.

Nadia did not decide divorce yet.

People wanted clean:

Husband redeems by exposing mother.

Reality:

He had own layers.

He loved Nadia.

Loved June.

Also lied.

Nadia’s trust did not restore because he finally admitted.

But admission created possibility.

She set condition:

“No private genetic or medical decisions about June without me unless emergency.”

“Full financial disclosure of any Kline/Fairmont related.”

“No communication with Priscilla about case unless shared? Too controlling maybe.”

“Tell me if she contacts.”

He agreed.

Not marriage probation contract exactly, but boundaries.

Wesley handed file also to legal team.

It showed Kline had explicit notice of his objection.

Strong.

Kline’s lawyers attacked:

Why remain patient if suspicious?

Consent to clinic maybe assumed standard.

No.

Explicit donor selection.

A doctor cannot infer consent to substitution because patient stayed.

The private file became key.

It also held one handwritten note Wesley had written after June’s birth:

She is mine because I am here. Remember that.

Nadia cried reading.

He had been fighting bloodline internally long before.

She asked:

“Why write?”

“Mother said she hoped baby looked like me.”

That sentence triggered.

Priscilla's obsession.

Wesley knew donor unrelated, so resemblance unlikely.

He wrote reminder to himself.

Then, ironically, June was genetically related after all.

But he did not need.

Nadia kept copy of note.

May you like

Not because forgave.

Because true.
