Months after wedding, Sophie volunteered at fundraising event connected to addiction recovery. Claire attended.
They crossed paths awkwardly.
Sophie expected coldness.
Claire said:
“I read your statement.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
Sophie hesitated.
“Can I ask something?”
Claire smiled slightly.
“The invitation.”
Sophie laughed embarrassed.
“Yes.”
Claire explained.
After treatment, she created small list of people she considered “recovery family.”
Ava was first.
When planning wedding, Claire told coordinator:
“If Ava comes, no one delays her. She may decide at last minute and I need her able to reach me.”
So invitation included:
Personal guest of bride. Family access. No screening delay.
That was why Collins changed.
Not because card said billionaire.
It did not list wealth.
It listed trust.
Sophie looked stunned.
“All this time I thought…”
“That it was money?”
“Yes.”
Claire shook head.
“Ava would hate that.”
Sophie looked down.
“I think I finally understand why.”
Claire studied her.
“Do you?”
