Chapter 20 - SOPHIE RETURNS TO THE ASTORNine months after wedding, Sophie returned to Imperial Astor.

Not for gala.
For investor meeting.
Sterling Ventures had invited her to pitch second time.
She arrived wearing navy suit from mid-range designer.
No red gown.
No statement bag.
She stopped at entrance.
Mr. Collins stood there.
He recognized her immediately.
For a second both remembered.
“This place only suits people like me.”
Sophie’s face warmed.
“Good morning.”
“Good morning, Ms. Hale.”
He did not mock.
He asked:
“May I see your meeting confirmation?”
She showed phone.
He checked.
“Thank you. Twelfth floor.”
Professional.
Same treatment he now gave everyone.
Sophie hesitated.
“Mr. Collins.”
“Yes?”
“I’m sorry for what I said that night.”
He looked surprised.
“You weren’t speaking to me.”
“I helped make situation worse.”
He nodded slowly.
“Thank you.”
Then he opened door.
No bow.
No special treatment.
Perfect.
Upstairs, Sophie pitched.
Real data.
Real margins.
Real customers.
Lucas Sterling asked:
“What changed?”
Sophie knew he meant more than business.
“I stopped building company to prove I belonged in rooms like this.”
“What are you building it for?”
“A customer.”
Lucas smiled.
“Much better answer.”
Sterling offered seed investment:
$1.5 million,
conditional milestones,
reasonable valuation.
Not fantasy huge.
Sophie accepted.
After meeting she stood in elevator holding term sheet.
She wanted to post immediately.
Instead she called her mother.
Then her cousin who had given cheap apartment.
Then the freelancer who helped first products.
Ava was not on list.
Not because she didn’t matter.
Because Sophie had finally built something that did not require Ava’s name.
Later that evening she sent one text:
Sterling invested. No introduction needed.
Ava replied:
Congratulations. That sounds like yours.
May you like
Sophie cried.
That was enough.
