Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE SECRET

Adrian returned home expecting an explanation.

Instead, he found someone waiting in the library.

A woman in her late fifties sat quietly beside the window.

Adrian recognized her.

Eleanor's closest friend.

Margaret Hayes.

She had worked with his mother for years.

“You knew?”

Margaret nodded.

“Your mother asked me to watch over you.”

Adrian frowned.

“Why?”

“Because she knew what money could do to people.”

Margaret handed him another envelope.

Inside were letters written by Eleanor.

One was addressed to Adrian.

He opened it carefully.

“My son,

If you are reading this, something has gone wrong.

Your father may have removed you from the inheritance.

Do not hate him.

Ask yourself why.”

Adrian's eyes filled with tears.

The letter continued.

“Your father believes that giving you everything would destroy you.

I agree.”

Adrian lowered the page.

Margaret watched him.

“She loved you very much,” she said.

“Then why didn't she tell me?”

“She tried.”

Adrian looked up.

Margaret's expression changed.

“Your mother discovered Victor's plan before she died.”

Adrian froze.

“What plan?”

“Victor wanted control of the company.”

“And my father?”

“Your father wanted to stop him without destroying you.”

Adrian realized the complexity of the situation.

Richard had spent years protecting him from Victor.

But he had also spent years protecting Adrian from himself.

Margaret leaned closer.

“There is one more thing.”

“What?”

“Your father never intended to permanently disinherit you.”

Adrian stared.

“What?”

“He created a test.”

Margaret explained that the inheritance could be restored if Adrian demonstrated genuine change.

Not by earning money.

By making a sacrifice.

Adrian asked:

“What sacrifice?”

Margaret shook her head.

“That is something only your father can tell you.”

Adrian stood.

He suddenly understood.

May you like

The will wasn't the end.

It was a test.
