THE LAST CAR HIS FATHER EVER / Chapter 9 / 18

Chapter 9 - WHAT FATHER NEVER TOLD HIM

Adrian opened the envelope at 2:14 a.m.

Inside was a single letter.

The handwriting was his father's.

“Adrian,

You have asked me many times why I keep saying no.

The truth is, I rarely said no.

I said yes because I loved you.

But love without boundaries can become cruelty.

Not toward the child.

Toward the adult that child becomes.”

Adrian stopped reading.

His eyes moved to the next paragraph.

“Your grandfather taught me one lesson I never forgot.

A person who inherits everything without understanding its value will eventually destroy it.”

Adrian swallowed.

His grandfather had died when Adrian was young.

He barely remembered him.

The letter continued.

“That is why I built the Sterling Legacy Trust.

Not to protect your inheritance.

To protect you from it.”

Adrian frowned.

He had never heard of such a trust.

Then he saw a final sentence.

“There is one thing you must discover before you can understand my decision.”

Beneath it was an address.

An old warehouse.

Adrian recognized it.

It was the first property Sterling Holdings had ever owned.

He drove there the next morning.

The building looked abandoned.

Inside, dust covered the floor.

But one office remained locked.

Adrian found the key hidden beneath an old metal desk.

He opened the door.

Inside were boxes.

Dozens of them.

Financial records.

Contracts.

Photographs.

And a single file labeled:

“ADRIAN STERLING — FUTURE SUCCESSION.”

His heart began beating faster.

He opened it.

The first page shocked him.

It was an old succession plan.

Adrian was listed as future chairman.

But beside his name was a handwritten note.

“Only if he earns it.”

Adrian turned the page.

There were evaluation reports.

Private observations.

Notes about his behavior.

His spending.

His failures.

His attitude toward employees.

His treatment of family.

Adrian's face burned.

His father had been watching him for years.

Then he found the final report.

It was dated three months earlier.

And it contained one sentence:

“Adrian is not ready.”

Adrian closed the file.

For the first time, he understood.

His father hadn't suddenly changed his mind.

Richard had been waiting.
