CHAPTER 1

CHAPTER 1
The Parrot Was Never Wrong
At exactly 8:15 p.m., the Hayes mansion glowed like a palace overlooking the Atlantic.
Crystal chandeliers illuminated the marble foyer.
Classical music drifted through the ballroom as Boston's wealthiest families gathered to celebrate Margaret Hayes' sixty-third birthday.
The evening had been planned for months.
Every detail reflected perfection.
The flowers had been imported from the Netherlands.
The wine came from Margaret's private vineyard in Napa Valley.
Even the staff had spent the entire week rehearsing every movement to ensure nothing disturbed the celebration.
Among them was Anna Carter.
For nearly twelve years, Anna had worked as the Hayes family's housekeeper.
She wasn't simply an employee.
She knew where every painting belonged.
She remembered every birthday.
Every anniversary.
Every family argument that ended with forced smiles at the dinner table.
Margaret trusted her more than most relatives.
That trust was precisely why Anna felt sick as she quietly walked toward the second floor.
Inside the pocket of her apron rested a folded note.
No signature.
No fingerprints.
Only one sentence.
"Take the safe key before 8:30. Leave it inside the blue vase in the east garden. Say nothing."
Anna had read it at least twenty times that afternoon.
Then came the second envelope.
Fifty thousand dollars in cash.
No explanation.
Only another note.
"No key. No money."
She should have gone to the police.
She knew that.
Instead...
She had spent the last three hours convincing herself that perhaps this was just another ugly dispute between wealthy family members.
Maybe Margaret wanted to test someone's loyalty.
Maybe one of her children was hiding assets from another.
Rich families had secrets.
Anna had learned that long ago.
She stopped outside Margaret's private dressing room.
The hallway was empty.
Downstairs, applause echoed through the mansion as Margaret began thanking her guests.
Anna looked at her watch.
8:22 p.m.
She had less than eight minutes.
She quietly opened the dressing room door.
Soft golden lights reflected from enormous mirrors surrounded by designer handbags, perfume bottles, and velvet jewelry cases.
Everything remained exactly where Margaret always left it.
Except tonight...
Anna wasn't there to clean.
She walked toward the white leather chair where Margaret's navy-blue handbag rested.
Her hands trembled.
"Just take the key," she whispered to herself.
"Leave."
"Forget tonight ever happened."
She slowly unzipped the handbag.
Inside were reading glasses...
A leather wallet...
A pearl compact...
And finally...
A small brass key attached to a silver tag engraved with only one word.
SAFE.
Anna reached toward it.
Her fingertips were only inches away.
Then—
A loud burst of wings shattered the silence.
Charlie, the African Grey parrot perched beside the dressing room entrance, suddenly flapped wildly.
His intelligent gray eyes locked onto Anna.
Then he screamed at the top of his lungs.
"THIEF! THIEF!"
The sound echoed through the entire second floor.
Anna jerked her hand away as if the key had burned her.
Charlie's wings continued beating furiously.
"THIEF! THIEF! SHE TOOK THE KEY!"
Downstairs...
The music stopped.
Footsteps thundered across the marble staircase.
Voices filled the hallway.
Within seconds, Margaret Hayes appeared in the doorway, followed by her two sons, several guests, and three members of the household staff.
No one spoke.
Every eye fixed on Anna.
She still stood beside the open handbag.
Margaret's face hardened.
"Anna..."
Her voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
"What are you doing?"
Anna opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
The silence became unbearable.
One of the guests whispered,
"I knew something wasn't right."
Another quietly muttered,
"Charlie has never lied."
Anna slowly withdrew her hand from the handbag and took one step backward.
She knew exactly how this looked.
Twelve years of loyalty...
Destroyed in ten seconds.
Margaret walked toward the chair.
She looked inside the handbag.
The safe key was still there.
Untouched.
Then she turned back to Anna.
"If you weren't stealing it..."
"...why were you reaching for it?"
Anna closed her eyes.
She could stay silent.
Accept the blame.
Take the money.
Or...
She could tell the truth.
She slowly raised one trembling hand.
Not toward Margaret.
Not toward the handbag.
Toward the dressing room door that had been left slightly open.
Every person in the room instinctively turned.
Behind the door...
Only the edge of a white designer dress was visible.
Someone had been standing there the entire time.
Listening.
Waiting.
Anna's voice barely rose above a whisper.
"I wasn't stealing the key..."
She swallowed hard.
Then finished the sentence that would change the Hayes family forever.
"She told me to do it."
The woman behind the door didn't move.
Not even an inch.
The mansion fell into absolute silence.
