CHAPTER 4
The Secret Hidden Behind the Mirror

For nearly thirty years...

No one in the Hayes family knew the second safe existed.

Not Daniel.

Not Victoria.

Not even Margaret's late husband.

The only people who had ever seen it were Margaret herself...

And the attorney who had installed it after a burglary decades earlier.

Margaret slowly inserted the brass key.

The lock clicked.

The heavy steel door swung open.

Everyone leaned forward.

No diamonds.

No stacks of cash.

No rare jewelry.

Inside the safe sat only three items.

A faded leather journal.

A sealed manila envelope.

And a small velvet jewelry box.

Daniel frowned.

"That's... all?"

Margaret nodded.

"Everything else is in the main safe."

She carefully removed the journal.

Its cover was worn from years of handling.

"The Hayes family has been adding one entry to this journal every generation for more than a hundred years."

She looked at Daniel.

"One day it was supposed to be yours."

Daniel accepted the journal carefully.

"What about the envelope?"

Margaret didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she picked it up and stared at the handwriting on the front.

It simply read:

Open only if my family turns against itself.

The room fell silent.

Margaret smiled bitterly.

"I prayed I'd never have to read this."

She broke the seal.

Inside was a single handwritten letter.

The signature at the bottom belonged to her late husband, Richard Hayes.

Daniel recognized it instantly.

His father's handwriting.

Margaret began reading aloud.

"If this letter has been opened... then someone in this family values money more than trust."

No one spoke.

"The key hidden in Margaret's handbag was never meant to protect wealth."

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

Margaret continued.

"It was designed to reveal who would try to steal it."

Anna slowly looked up.

"What?"

Margaret folded the letter.

"The key has never opened anything important."

Daniel blinked.

"What do you mean?"

Margaret held the brass key in the palm of her hand.

"It opens this safe..."

"...and nothing inside this safe has any financial value."

Victoria frowned.

"Then why keep it hidden?"

Margaret looked directly at her.

"Because people always chase what they think is valuable."

Silence.

Then Margaret opened the velvet jewelry box.

Inside...

Rested an old silver key.

Much smaller than the brass one.

Daniel had never seen it before.

Margaret held it up.

"This..."

"...is the real safe key."

Every face in the room changed.

Anna whispered,

"So I stole the wrong key."

Margaret nodded gently.

"You were sent after the decoy."

Victoria stared at the tiny silver key.

Her breathing became shallow.

She hadn't known.

Which meant...

Whoever had planned the theft hadn't known either.

Daniel suddenly looked at his mother.

"Then whoever sent Anna..."

"...has never actually seen the real safe."

Margaret smiled.

"Exactly."

For the first time that evening...

She stopped looking at Anna.

She stopped looking at Victoria.

Instead...

She slowly turned toward the family members gathered near the doorway.

Her eyes settled on someone who hadn't spoken all night.

Ethan Hayes.

Her youngest son.

Forty years old.

Quiet.

Successful.

Always avoiding family arguments.

Ethan looked surprised.

"Mom..."

"Why are you looking at me?"

Margaret walked toward him.

Very slowly.

"You've been unusually quiet."

"I don't understand."

"Neither did I."

She stopped only a few feet away.

"Until Charlie said something."

Ethan forced a smile.

"The bird?"

Margaret nodded.

"Charlie didn't say..."

'Wrong daughter.'

She looked Ethan straight in the eyes.

"He said..."

'Wrong daughter-in-law.'

The room fell silent.

Daniel's face changed.

Victoria looked confused.

Anna frowned.

Margaret continued calmly.

"There has only ever been one daughter-in-law in this room tonight."

She turned toward Victoria.

"So Charlie wasn't talking about you."

Then she looked back at Ethan.

"He was talking to someone else."

Ethan's smile slowly disappeared.

Margaret spoke one final sentence.

"The question is..."

"...who was Charlie answering?"

At that exact moment...

Charlie suddenly spread his wings.

He stared directly at Ethan.

Then repeated a sentence in a man's voice.

A voice everyone in the Hayes family recognized instantly.

It was Richard Hayes.

The late patriarch of the family.

"Don't tell your brother..."

Charlie paused.

Then finished the sentence.

"...the second key belongs to Ethan."

No one in the room moved.

Ethan's face turned completely pale.

For the first time...

Margaret realized this was never about stealing a key.

It was about a family secret...

That Richard Hayes had taken to his grave.
