CHAPTER 5

CHAPTER 5
Richard's Last Secret
No one spoke.
The only sound inside the dressing room was Charlie softly clicking his beak.
Ethan Hayes stood frozen.
His face had lost every trace of color.
Daniel stared at his younger brother.
"What did Charlie just say?"
Ethan swallowed.
"I... I don't know."
Margaret didn't blink.
"Yes, you do."
She slowly walked toward Charlie's perch.
The African Grey ruffled his feathers before lowering his head.
Margaret gently stroked his neck.
"For twenty-three years," she said quietly, "Richard talked to Charlie almost every morning."
She smiled sadly.
"He believed birds never judged people."
"So he told Charlie everything."
Daniel felt a chill run down his spine.
"You mean..."
"Charlie has been repeating Dad's conversations all these years?"
Margaret nodded.
"Only when something reminds him."
She turned toward Ethan again.
"You've known about the second key."
Ethan immediately shook his head.
"No."
"Then why did you turn pale?"
Silence.
Margaret waited.
She had learned long ago that silence often forced people to speak more than questions ever could.
Finally...
Ethan exhaled.
"When Dad died..."
"He gave me a letter."
Daniel looked shocked.
"A letter?"
"You never told us."
"I promised him I wouldn't."
Margaret frowned.
"What did it say?"
Ethan reached into the inside pocket of his jacket.
Slowly...
He removed a yellowed envelope.
The paper looked old.
Its edges were worn from years of being carried.
Across the front, written in Richard Hayes' unmistakable handwriting, were six words.
For Ethan. Open after my funeral.
Margaret stared at it.
She had never seen the envelope before.
Ethan handed it to her.
"I've carried it for eleven years."
"You never opened it?" Daniel asked.
"I did."
"And?"
Ethan looked toward the hidden safe.
"It only contained one sentence."
Margaret carefully unfolded the letter.
Her hands trembled.
Inside...
Exactly one line had been written.
Protect the second key until your mother asks for it.
Nothing else.
No explanation.
No signature.
Daniel frowned.
"That's impossible."
"What?"
"Dad never trusted secrets."
Margaret looked at him.
"He trusted responsibility."
Daniel turned toward Ethan.
"So you've known where the real key was this entire time?"
Ethan nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"And you never touched it?"
"No."
"Why?"
Ethan smiled sadly.
"Because Dad told me if anyone ever asked for it..."
"...it meant our family had already begun falling apart."
The room became painfully quiet.
Anna lowered her eyes.
She suddenly realized she had never been hired to steal money.
She had been used to test a family.
Margaret folded the letter carefully.
Then looked toward Victoria.
"My daughter..."
"I owe you an apology."
Victoria looked surprised.
"You believed I planned this."
Margaret nodded.
"I did."
Victoria gave a weak smile.
"I would've believed the same."
Anna stepped forward.
"I'm sorry too."
"I accused you."
Victoria gently shook her head.
"You were frightened."
For the first time that evening...
The tension inside the room began fading.
Then...
Charlie suddenly let out another loud squawk.
Everyone looked toward him.
The bird tilted his head.
Then repeated another sentence.
One nobody had heard before.
"Don't trust the lawyer."
Margaret's smile disappeared.
Daniel frowned.
"Our lawyer?"
Charlie nodded repeatedly.
Then, in Richard Hayes' unmistakable voice, he continued.
"If anything happens to me..."
He paused.
Every person in the room leaned forward.
Then Charlie finished the sentence.
"...check the will twice."
Margaret's hands began shaking.
Richard had changed his will only three weeks before he died.
Only one person had been present during that meeting.
Their longtime family attorney.
Harold Preston.
Margaret slowly lowered herself into a chair.
For eleven years...
She had believed Richard's estate had been settled fairly.
Now...
For the first time...
She wondered if Richard had been trying to warn them all along.
She looked at Daniel.
"Call Harold."
Daniel immediately reached for his phone.
A few seconds later...
He looked back up.
"He isn't answering."
Margaret frowned.
"Try his office."
Daniel did.
The receptionist answered immediately.
After less than thirty seconds...
Daniel's face changed.
"What is it?" Margaret asked.
He slowly lowered the phone.
"Harold resigned this afternoon."
The room fell silent.
"Resigned?" Margaret whispered.
Daniel nodded.
"He cleared out his office..."
"...three hours before tonight's party began."
Everyone looked at one another.
The safe.
The fake key.
Anna.
Victoria.
None of it had been about the Hayes family's fortune.
Someone had needed the entire family distracted...
On the exact night their lawyer disappeared.
Margaret slowly looked toward Charlie.
The old parrot closed his eyes.
As if he had finally said everything Richard had wanted his family to hear.
