CHAPTER 3

CHAPTER 3
The Voice Charlie Never Forgot
No one moved.
Charlie's words echoed through the dressing room like a gunshot.
"Don't worry... she'll take the blame."
The parrot lowered his head, blinking innocently as if nothing unusual had happened.
But the damage had already been done.
Margaret slowly turned toward Victoria.
"What did he just say?"
Victoria forced a laugh.
"It's a parrot."
"They repeat anything."
Daniel wasn't convinced.
"Charlie usually repeats complete conversations."
"Not random words."
Margaret nodded.
For twenty-three years, Charlie had lived in the Hayes mansion.
He wasn't famous for talking often.
He was famous for remembering.
If he repeated something...
Someone in this house had said it.
Victoria crossed her arms.
"Then maybe Anna said it."
Anna immediately shook her head.
"I've never said those words."
"No?"
Victoria replied calmly.
"You've worked here twelve years."
"How do we know Charlie didn't hear it months ago?"
It was a reasonable explanation.
Too reasonable.
Daniel looked toward his mother.
Margaret quietly walked to Charlie's golden stand.
She gently stroked the bird's gray feathers.
"What else do you remember?"
Charlie tilted his head.
For several seconds...
Nothing.
Then he softly whistled.
Margaret smiled sadly.
"See?"
"He's finished."
Just as everyone began relaxing...
Charlie suddenly flapped his wings again.
His amber eyes fixed directly on Victoria.
Then, in a completely different tone of voice...
He repeated another sentence.
One nobody expected.
"The key first... then the safe."
The room froze.
Daniel slowly turned toward his wife.
Victoria didn't move.
But the color had begun fading from her face.
Margaret looked at Charlie.
"When did you hear that?"
Charlie bobbed his head.
Then mimicked the sound of a closing door.
Click.
Click.
Exactly like the automatic lock on the dressing room.
Daniel whispered,
"That's the dressing room door."
Anna nodded.
"He only makes that sound when someone comes in here."
Victoria quickly interrupted.
"Or he heard it on television."
Daniel looked at her.
"There isn't a television in this room."
Silence.
Victoria looked away.
Only for a second.
Ryan—no, there was no detective in this story.
Instead...
Margaret quietly walked toward the handbag.
She picked up the safe key.
Then looked at Anna.
"You said someone wanted this key."
Anna nodded.
"Yes."
Margaret frowned.
"But why?"
Anna hesitated.
"I don't know."
Margaret slowly closed the handbag.
"No."
"I think you do."
Anna looked up.
Margaret's voice remained calm.
"You weren't reaching for my jewelry."
"You weren't reaching for money."
"You came for one specific key."
"That means whoever hired you..."
"...already knew exactly what was inside my safe."
Daniel looked surprised.
"Mom..."
"I've never even seen inside that safe."
Margaret gave a slow nod.
"Neither has most of this family."
She looked around the room.
Then quietly added,
"Only four people know everything that's inside."
Daniel.
Victoria.
Her personal attorney.
And...
Anna.
Victoria immediately seized the opportunity.
"There."
She pointed at Anna.
"She admitted it."
"She knows what's inside."
Anna shook her head desperately.
"I only know because I've cleaned this room."
"I've never opened the safe."
Margaret stared at her for several moments.
Then asked a question that surprised everyone.
"When was the last time you saw me open it?"
Anna answered immediately.
"Three weeks ago."
Margaret nodded.
"And what did I take out?"
Anna frowned.
"I..."
She stopped.
She couldn't remember.
Margaret smiled faintly.
"Exactly."
"You couldn't."
"Because I never opened the safe."
Daniel looked confused.
"What?"
Margaret walked slowly toward the wall mirror.
Then pressed her hand against the decorative wooden frame beside it.
A hidden panel slid silently open.
Behind it...
Another safe appeared.
Smaller.
Older.
Completely hidden behind the mirror.
Every person in the room stared in disbelief.
Daniel whispered,
"There's... another safe?"
Margaret nodded.
"The brass key doesn't open the family safe."
She held up the key everyone had been arguing over.
"It opens this one."
Victoria's breathing became uneven.
Margaret noticed.
"So..."
She said quietly.
"Now I have a different question."
She looked directly at Victoria.
"If this key was never for the family safe..."
"...how did someone convince Anna it was?"
For the first time that evening...
Victoria didn't answer.
Because she couldn't.
She had never known...
There were two safes.
Which meant...
If she had planned the theft...
She had been chasing the wrong key all along.
Charlie's feathers ruffled again.
He leaned forward.
Opened his beak.
And spoke six words that made Margaret's heart stop.
"Wrong key... wrong daughter... wrong plan."
The room fell completely silent.
