Chapter 20 - ELENA WROTE TO THE CHILDRENElena sent letters from prison.

The first asked for forgiveness.

The second blamed Nolan.

The third said she missed the children.

Mia read none.

Leo opened one at fourteen.

Elena wrote:

I disciplined you because I believed structure would make you stronger.

Leo stopped.

“That’s not sorry.”

“No.”

“She still calls it discipline.”

“Yes.”

He tore the letter in half.

Then hesitated.

“Can I do that?”

“It belongs to you.”

He tore it again.

Mia kept her sealed letters inside an evidence box.

Not because she planned to read them.

Because choosing not to was different from having them hidden.

Elena lost the right to control when or whether the children heard her.

That consequence mattered more than any reply.
