Chapter 22 - THE BAT ENTERED THE COURT ARCHIVEThe wooden baseball bat remained in evidence until every appeal ended.

Its handle had split against the coffee table.

Elena’s fingerprints covered the grip.

Mine overlapped them where I stopped her.

Mia’s fingerprints did not appear.

That fact destroyed Elena’s original claim that Mia held it first.

When the court offered to return the bat, I refused.

Mia wanted it preserved in a public archive about coercive family surveillance.

The display included no image of the children hiding beneath the table.

Their terror did not become entertainment.

The plaque stated:

AN ADULT MAY CLAIM AN OBJECT WAS NEVER USED TO STRIKE.

FEAR CAN STILL BE THE INTENDED INJURY.

Visitors understood.

Some recognized abuse that left no dramatic wound.

Threats near the body.

Broken objects.

Locked rooms.

Recorded humiliation.

The absence of a final blow did not make the raised bat harmless.
