Chapter 7 - THE MAN INSIDE THE MANSIONPolice surrounded the mansion.

The freight truck stood near the service entrance.

Its cargo area was empty.

A muddy footprint crossed the kitchen floor.

Then disappeared.

Nolan knew the house better than officers did.

The original plans showed a utility corridor behind the pool wall.

Sophia added it during renovations.

The corridor connected the garage, living room and underground wine cellar.

Nolan supervised construction.

Mia and Leo remained at Claire’s home under police protection.

I was ordered to stay away.

I disobeyed halfway.

I drove to the security perimeter but did not enter.

Detective Morris met me at the gate.

“If you cross that line, I arrest you.”

“He may know where Sophia hid other evidence.”

“He may also expect you.”

“What does he want?”

“The company. The trust. Control of the narrative.”

“He already lost all three.”

“That makes him more dangerous.”

A shot sounded inside the house.

Officers moved toward the rear entrance.

Another shot shattered one of the glass doors overlooking the pool.

A man emerged holding a pistol.

Not Nolan.

Our security director, Warren Cole.

Warren had worked for me for nine years.

He dropped the weapon after officers shouted.

Nolan had tied him inside the wine cellar and taken his uniform.

The man wearing Warren’s clothes remained inside.

Police searched for three hours.

They found no one.

Then Mia called me.

Her voice was a whisper.

“Dad, someone is in Aunt Claire’s garage.”

My body went cold.

“Where are you?”

“Upstairs.”

“Where is Leo?”

“Under the bed.”

“Lock the door.”

“The lock doesn’t work.”

“Push the dresser against it.”

“I can’t move it.”

I signaled Detective Morris.

She called the protection team at Claire’s house.

No one answered.

Nolan had drawn police to the mansion while attacking the children’s safe location.

“Mia, put the phone down but don’t disconnect.”

Footsteps entered her hallway.

A man tried the bedroom handle.

Mia stopped breathing.

“Open the door,” Nolan said.

I heard his voice through the phone.

“You have something that belongs to me.”

Leo began crying beneath the bed.

Nolan pushed harder.

The door opened several inches.

Mia braced her body against it.

“Dad!”

I heard wood strike the floor.

Then Claire’s voice shouted.

A struggle followed.

The call disconnected.

I ran toward my car.

Detective Morris caught my jacket.

“You cannot reach them before the tactical team.”

“I have to go.”

“You will arrive after the officers and give Nolan another hostage.”

The words stopped me.

Fatherhood demanded action.

It also demanded that action help.

I remained behind the line while every instinct tore against it.

Nine minutes later, the tactical commander reported.

The children were safe.

Claire had struck Nolan’s arm with a tire iron.

He escaped through the backyard before officers arrived.

The protection officers had been drugged through coffee delivered by a fake courier.

Nolan planned everything.

Almost everything.

He did not expect Claire to fight.

At the hospital, Mia told me what Nolan wanted.

The brass key from Sophia’s photograph.

Mia had never found it.

But while pushing against the bedroom door, she remembered something.

Sophia once told her:

“When you’re afraid, look beneath the place where we all sit together.”

The coffee table.

Police had searched the hidden compartment.

The recorder was all they found.

Mia believed there was another compartment beneath the bottom panel.

When forensic technicians lifted the table, they discovered a narrow brass lock.

No key.

Inside the broken photograph frame, beneath the hidden camera, a small cavity remained empty.

Elena had found the key before the bat incident.

May you like

She had lied to Nolan.

She kept it.
