Chapter 23 - MIA OPENED THE FRONT DOORAt eighteen, Mia returned to the old mansion.

New owners had converted it into a family counseling institute with our approval.

The glass doors still overlooked the pool.

The living room contained simpler furniture.

No hidden cameras.

The entrance doors locked automatically now.

Mia stood outside.

For years, she remembered screaming while waiting for me to open them.

Dad! Please help us!

The director offered to open the door.

Mia shook her head.

She used the visitor code herself.

The doors swung inward.

She entered without running.

No bat.

No Elena.

No frightened brother beneath a table.

Leo followed.

He was sixteen now and taller than both of us.

“Do you want to see the pantry?” he asked.

“No.”

“Me neither.”

They laughed.

Refusal did not require explanation.
