Chapter 16 - THE STORY GRAHAM NEVER TOLD HIS SONGraham chose Saturday.

No therapist first.

He asked Eli walk.

They went Charles River path.

Graham told full age-appropriate story.

He and Tessa met young.

Loved.

Fought.

Neither handled conflict.

After Eli born, stress exploded.

Tessa struggled with anxiety and unstable work.

Graham became controlling about schedules and money.

Tessa felt trapped.

She left relationship.

For months they shared custody badly.

Missed handoffs.

Arguments.

Lawyers.

Tessa moved for job because needed income.

She agreed Graham primary because Eli school stable.

Graham used better resources to secure.

He also sometimes threatened court when she wanted changes.

Not noble.

Tessa missed visits.

Sometimes from money.

Sometimes new jobs.

Sometimes avoidance.

Graham grew resentful.

He started telling Eli:

“Mom couldn’t make it.”

Then:

“Mom isn’t coming.”

Eventually:

“Mom left.”

Simpler.

Crueler.

Eli listened.

“Did she choose career over me?”

“Sometimes she chose survival.”

“Sometimes work.”

“Sometimes herself.”

“And sometimes she made bad choices.”

“Did you make bad?”

“Yes.”

“Did you stop calls?”

“Yes.”

“Did Naomi?”

“No.”

Immediate.

“She didn’t know your mom when you were little.”

“So Mom lied.”

“She guessed and spoke from hurt.”

“Same as lied.”

Graham didn't defend.

“Sometimes.”

Eli kicked pebble.

“Why did you marry Naomi?”

“Love.”

“Did you want new mom?”

“No.”

“I wanted partner.”

“I hoped you’d have adult who cared.”

“Did you ask me?”

“You were eleven.”

“That’s no.”

Graham smiled sadly.

“No.”

“You always decide.”

“I did.”

“Will you stop?”

“I’ll stop deciding things that belong you.”

“I still decide some because father.”

Eli groaned.

“See.”

“Fourteen.”

“Almost fifteen.”

“Still.”

They smiled.

Then Eli asked hardest:

“Did Mom ever try come get me?”

Graham:

“She asked for more time several times.”

“And you said no?”

“Sometimes.”

“Why?”

“I thought unstable.”

“And I was angry.”

“Both.”

Eli cried quietly.

“I could've had her.”

“Maybe more.”

“But I can't promise it would've been good.”

“I wanted choice.”

“I know.”

Graham put arm.

Eli allowed.

“I’m sorry.”

“Everyone.”

“Yeah.”

They sat bench.

Graham:

“I want you know something.”

“Your mom leaving wasn’t because you weren't enough.”

“My blocking wasn’t because I wanted hurt.”

“Naomi being here isn't replacement.”

“Adults made choices around you.”

Eli:

“Bad ones.”

“Yes.”

“You too.”

“Yes.”

“Mom too.”

“Yes.”

“Naomi too.”

“Yes.”

“And me.”

Graham looked.

“You made some.”

Eli whispered:

“I lied.”

“Yes.”

“About cigarette.”

“Yes.”

“And about Naomi bullying.”

Graham's chest tightened.

“Why?”

Eli looked water.

“Because I knew you'd choose me.”

That confession came earlier outline chap19, but can foreshadow? We should save full impact later. Here he almost says maybe: "Because I knew..." stops. Let's adjust: He says "Because I was mad." Keep reveal later. Fine.

He said:

“Because I was mad.”

May you like

Graham accepted for now.

But the full truth would come later.
