Chapter 20 - THE FATHER WHO ALWAYS CHOSE HIS SONGraham once believed phrase:

I will always choose you.
He had said after divorce.
Six-year-old Eli cried:
“What if you get new wife?”
Graham:
“I will always choose you.”
Child heard:
Dad won't abandon.
Teen learned:
Dad will take my side.
Words changed meaning.
Graham explained.
“When I said choose, I meant love and stay.”
Eli:
“Same.”
“No.”
“If you lie, I choose you by making you tell truth.”
“If you hurt someone, I choose you by not letting you become person who avoids consequences.”
“If someone hurts you, I choose you by protecting.”
“If both, I deal with both.”
Eli rolled eyes but listened.
Naomi added:
“And I don’t need him choose between us.”
Tessa later said same.
No custody tug.
Graham practiced.
Eli failed math test.
He blamed teacher.
Graham asked see assignments.
Two missing.
Old Graham would say teacher harsh.
New:
“You missed work.”
Eli:
“You don't understand.”
“I can understand and consequence.”
Phone/gaming reduced until catch up.
Eli furious.
Then improved.
No relationship collapse.
Graham learned.
He also challenged Naomi when necessary.
Naomi imposed no phone after 10.
Graham thought too strict for weekend.
Instead of undermining in front Eli, adults discussed and modified jointly to 11 Friday/Saturday.
Eli saw:
rules negotiable through conversation, not splitting.
He hated at first because couldn’t play.
Then adjusted.
Tessa got formal schedule.
Graham didn't block because hurt.
When Tessa was late one pickup, he felt old urge say unreliable.
Instead called:
“ETA?”
Traffic.
Twenty minutes.
She arrived.
No narrative.
Tiny repairs.
