“Unnecessary attack.”

Tessa laughed.

For first time, all four laughed.

Then serious.

Smoking:

Eli had not used nicotine since. Random? No need testing. He had no dependence.

He stopped Bryce contact for months.

Recently Bryce apologized via message:

Shouldn’t have pushed.

Eli accepted but didn't resume close.

Cole:

“Bryce is getting help too.”

Good.

Eli:

“Can I see him?”

Adults looked.

Old system sides.

New:

Ask conditions.

Graham:

“Why?”

“Because he’s not evil.”

Tessa:

“No one said.”

Naomi:

“Public place, no tobacco, adult knows?”

Eli:

“That’s embarrassing.”

Cole:

“Then no.”

Eli glared.

Cole:

“I’m adult who screwed up before. I’m not doing twice.”

Graham almost respected.

They agreed supervised casual group event.

No blanket ban forever.

Then authority.

Eli:

“Naomi can tell me what?”

Naomi:

“House rules, safety, chores.”

“Can she ground?”

Graham:

“We decide together for bigger.”

“Can she slap?”

Naomi:

“No.”

All clear.

Eli:

“Can Mom override?”

Tessa:

“No.”

“Can Dad stop visits because mad?”

Graham:

“No, unless safety/legal.”

“Can I choose where live?”

Parents:

“Not alone.”

Eli groaned.

Then phone privacy.

No secret reading except safety concern.

Eli no recording adults for custody unless safety and share trusted adult.

Adults no asking him evidence.

Then direct communication rule.

If Tessa upset Naomi -> tell Naomi or Graham/adult, not Eli.

If Naomi upset Tessa -> same.

If Graham upset -> no using Eli.

Simple.

After meeting, Tessa stood to leave.

Eli hugged.

Naomi handed Tessa leftover pie.

Tessa:

“Poison?”

Naomi:

“Only if you criticize crust.”

Humor.

Cole arrived.

Graham shook hand more naturally.

Not friends.

Functional.

Eli watched adults who once existed in separate hostile stories share same room without forcing him choose.

That was bigger than cigarette.

May you like

The cigarette had been hidden behind back because Eli believed truth would cost autonomy.

Now truth could complicate, but not end belonging.
