Chapter 24 - THE DAY ELI TELLS THE WHOLE TRUTHThere was one final detail Eli had never told.

He confessed voluntarily to Graham and Naomi in kitchen.
“I stole twenty dollars.”
Graham blinked.
“What?”
“From your wallet.”
“When?”
“Day before cigarette.”
Naomi looked.
“Why?”
“To give Bryce for pack.”
Graham closed eyes.
Not huge amount.
But theft.
Eli:
“I didn’t buy it. Bryce did.”
“I gave him money.”
So cigarette wasn't gift exactly; Eli financed.
He had minimized.
Why tell now?
“Because everyone keeps saying direct.”
Naomi:
“Thank you.”
Graham:
“You still repay.”
“I know.”
He worked chores? Allowance withheld, pays.
No shaming.
Then Eli:
“And I knew Naomi saw cigarette before I hid.”
“I knew if Dad came…”
Graham:
“We talked.”
“No. More.”
He looked father.
“I was kind of glad you came right after slap.”
Naomi’s face.
“Because?”
“I knew you’d be mad at her.”
“And I wanted her to get in trouble.”
Honest.
Naomi swallowed.
“Okay.”
Eli:
“I’m sorry.”
She nodded.
Graham:
“And I did exactly.”
“Yeah.”
Silence.
Then Eli looked Naomi.
“When you slapped, I hated you.”
“But also… I had been trying make you mad.”
Naomi responded immediately:
“That does not make slap your fault.”
He looked relieved.
“I know.”
“No. Really.”
“You provoking does not transfer adult responsibility.”
Good.
“And me lying doesn't make cigarette your fault.”
“Correct.”
They smiled.
Graham said:
“Look at us, accountability Olympics.”
Eli laughed.
Then Graham gave consequence for $20:
repay from chores/allowance and write apology? Not forced performative. He repays.
Later he told Tessa too.
She did not use to attack Graham.
“Thank you for telling.”
He realized whole truth did not destroy.
That was ending setup.
That afternoon Graham found Eli on porch holding something behind back.
Old panic.
“What’s that?”
Eli grinned.
“None of your business.”
Graham froze.
Then Eli revealed a birthday card for Naomi.
He had been hiding because surprise.
Graham laughed.
