Chapter 10 - The ApologyNathan approached Caleb slowly.

There was no crowd now. No guests. No phones. No image to protect.
Only truth.
“I need to apologize,” Nathan said.
Caleb stood still.
Nathan swallowed.
“Last night, I was terrified. That explains my fear, but it does not excuse what I said to you.”
Caleb’s expression remained guarded.
Nathan continued.
“You saw what I didn’t understand fast enough. You acted when others hesitated. You saved my son.”
His voice broke on the last word.
Oliver slipped off his chair and stood beside Claire.
Nathan’s eyes filled.
“And instead of thanking you, I treated you like a threat.”
Caleb looked down.
“I know what it looked like.”
Nathan shook his head.
“No. You don’t have to make it easier for me. I was wrong.”
The room was silent.
Nathan lowered himself to his knees.
Caleb’s eyes widened.
“Sir, you don’t have to—”
“Yes,” Nathan said, looking up at him. “I do.”
Mr. Bell looked shocked. Evelyn watched without interrupting.
Nathan’s voice trembled.
“My son is alive because of you. I can buy a hundred buildings, Caleb, but I could not buy back the seconds you gave him. I can never repay that.”
Caleb’s throat tightened.
“I didn’t do it for repayment.”
“I know.”
Nathan reached into his pocket, then stopped.
He seemed to realize money would be the wrong first answer.
So he put his hand back down.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “From one brother to another, from one father to the man who saved my child, I am sorry.”
The words struck Caleb harder than he expected.
From one brother to another.
He had not told Nathan much, but the footage, the photo, and the silence had said enough.
Oliver walked forward.
He held out a folded piece of paper.
Caleb took it carefully.
It was a drawing.
A superhero wearing an apron.
Under it, Oliver had written in uneven letters:
Thank you, Caleb.
Caleb stared at the picture.
His vision blurred.
For years, he had carried Jonah’s drawing in his locker.
Now another child had drawn him alive in a different story.
“Thank you,” Oliver said.
Caleb crouched so they were eye to eye.
“You were really brave.”
Oliver shook his head.
“I was scared.”
May you like
Caleb smiled through tears.
“Brave people are scared too.”
