Chapter 9 - The Footage Nobody ExpectedThat afternoon, The Sterling Room was closed to the public.

A printed sign on the front door read:
Private Staff Meeting
Inside, the dining room looked different without customers. The tables were empty. The golden lamps seemed less glamorous. The silence made last night’s chaos feel even closer.
Caleb entered through the back door out of habit.
Mia saw him first and hurried over.
“Are you okay?”
“I don’t know yet.”
“The staff is on your side,” she whispered.
Before Caleb could answer, Mr. Bell appeared near the office hallway. His face was stiff.
“Caleb.”
Caleb nodded once but said nothing.
Evelyn Hart stepped out behind him.
“Thank you for coming, Mr. Reed.”
She led him to a private dining room where Nathan, Claire, and Oliver were waiting.
Oliver sat close to his mother. When he saw Caleb, he gave a small, shy wave.
Caleb’s chest tightened.
“Hey, buddy,” he said softly.
Nathan stood.
For a moment, neither man spoke.
Nathan looked different without the noise of the restaurant around him. Less powerful. More human. His eyes were red, and his suit jacket was unbuttoned.
“Mr. Reed,” he began.
Caleb braced himself.
But Evelyn raised a hand.
“Before anyone speaks, I want all of us to watch the full footage.”
Mr. Bell shifted uncomfortably.
The lights dimmed.
The screen at the front of the room came alive.
The footage began earlier than Caleb expected.
It showed the Whitmore family entering.
It showed Oliver drawing in his notebook.
It showed Caleb glancing through the kitchen door several times while carrying trays, not staring, just aware.
Then it showed something subtle.
A waiter passed table seven. Oliver coughed lightly after taking a sip of water. Caleb noticed from the kitchen and looked concerned for a second before the boy smiled again.
The video continued.
Minutes later, Oliver took the bite that changed everything.
He grabbed his throat.
Claire stood.
Nathan froze.
The waiter hesitated.
A guest lifted a phone.
Caleb looked up.
For half a second, he did not move.
His face changed.
Anyone watching could see it.
Recognition.
Fear.
Memory.
Then he ran.
The footage showed Mr. Bell stepping into his path near the kitchen door, trying to stop him.
Caleb slipped past.
It showed Nathan shoving him.
It showed Caleb keeping his eyes on Oliver, not Nathan.
It showed Claire moving back just enough to give him space.
Then Oliver breathed.
The footage ended there.
No one spoke.
Then Evelyn clicked another file.
“This,” she said, “is from the hallway after Caleb was ordered back into the kitchen.”
The footage showed Mr. Bell pointing angrily.
It showed Caleb trying to explain.
It showed Mr. Bell dismissing him.
It showed Caleb removing his apron and leaving alone through the back door.
Oliver’s small voice broke the silence.
“Dad,” he whispered, “he looked scared too.”
Nathan covered his face with one hand.
Claire wiped her eyes.
Mr. Bell stared at the table.
May you like
Evelyn turned on the lights.
“Now,” she said, “we talk.”
