Chapter 7 - Claire’s DoubtAt the Whitmore house, Oliver slept late.

Claire sat beside his bed until morning, listening to his breathing.

Every small sound from him made her heart tighten. Every steady breath felt like a gift.

Nathan stood in the doorway with a coffee he had not touched.

“He’s okay,” Claire said quietly.

Nathan nodded.

But he did not look okay.

The house was huge, quiet, and polished. Everything in it reflected Nathan’s success, yet that morning it felt hollow.

Claire rose from the chair and walked into the hallway.

“We need to talk.”

Nathan followed her into the sitting room.

She turned to him.

“You were cruel last night.”

His jaw tightened. “I was scared.”

“I know. I was too.”

“He ran at our son.”

“He saved our son.”

Nathan looked away.

Claire stepped closer.

“You asked him who he was to do that. He showed you a photo of his brother, and you still let the manager drag him away.”

“I didn’t let anyone do anything.”

“You stayed silent.”

That hurt more because it was true.

Nathan set the coffee down.

“I couldn’t think.”

Claire’s voice softened, but only slightly.

“That young man could have walked away. He could have stayed in the kitchen. He could have told himself it wasn’t his problem.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“But he didn’t.”

“I know,” he whispered.

“Then why are you acting like he did something wrong?”

Nathan opened his eyes again, and for the first time Claire saw not arrogance, but shame.

“Because I did,” he said.

The admission sat between them.

Claire’s anger quieted.

Nathan sank into a chair and rubbed his forehead.

“I froze,” he said. “I saw Oliver in trouble, and I froze. Then that boy ran in and did what I couldn’t. Everyone saw it.”

Claire sat across from him.

“This isn’t about everyone.”

“It felt like it.”

“It’s about Oliver.”

Nathan nodded, but tears had gathered in his eyes.

“I almost stopped him.”

Claire reached for his hand.

“But you didn’t.”

“I tried.”

Her grip tightened.

“Then fix it.”

Nathan looked at her.

May you like

“How?”

“Find him,” Claire said. “Apologize. Properly. Not as Nathan Whitmore. As Oliver’s father.”
