Chapter 5 - Fired for Saving a LifeIn the kitchen, Mr. Bell’s anger exploded.

“What were you thinking?” he demanded.
Caleb stood near the dish station, hands still shaking.
“The child was choking.”
“You are not a doctor.”
“I’m trained in basic emergency response.”
“You are a kitchen assistant,” Mr. Bell snapped. “Your job is to stay in the kitchen.”
Caleb looked at him, stunned.
“My job is to be human first.”
The kitchen went silent.
A line cook looked down. A dishwasher stopped moving. Even the head chef, who had shouted when Caleb dropped the plates, said nothing.
Mr. Bell stepped closer.
“Do you know who that man is? Nathan Whitmore could ruin this restaurant with one phone call.”
Caleb’s jaw tightened.
“His son could have died in front of him.”
“Lower your voice.”
Caleb lowered it, but his words became sharper.
“I did what nobody else was doing.”
Mr. Bell’s face turned red.
“You embarrassed the restaurant.”
That sentence landed strangely.
Caleb thought of Oliver’s frightened eyes. He thought of Claire crying. He thought of the guests recording instead of helping.
Embarrassed.
That was what the manager cared about.
Not the boy.
Not the seconds.
Not the fact that Caleb’s hands were still trembling because, for one terrible moment, he had seen Jonah at table seven.
Mr. Bell pointed toward the back hallway.
“Clock out. You are suspended until further notice.”
A young waitress named Mia spoke up.
“Sir, he saved that kid.”
Mr. Bell turned on her. “Do you want to join him?”
Mia’s mouth closed, but her eyes stayed angry.
Caleb untied his apron slowly.
He folded it with more care than it deserved and placed it on the metal prep table.
The head chef finally spoke.
“Bell, come on. He acted fast.”
“I said he is suspended.”
Caleb did not argue anymore.
He walked to the employee locker room, opened his dented locker, and took out his jacket. Inside the locker, taped to the door, was a small drawing Jonah had made years before.
It showed two stick figures with capes.
Big brother.
Little brother.
Caleb touched the paper lightly.
May you like
“I moved,” he whispered.
Then he walked out through the back door into the cold night air.
