Chapter 14 - The Man Who Came BackDaniel Vega was found that night.

Not by police.
By Rosie.
Claire was sitting beside her daughter’s bed when Rosie looked toward the balcony doors.
Her eyes widened.
“Mommy.”
Claire followed her gaze.
A man stood outside on the lawn.
Black cap.
Dark coat.
Claire screamed.
Police stationed at the house moved instantly.
The man raised both hands.
He did not run.
“Maria!” he shouted.
Maria came into the hallway and stopped as though struck.
“Daniel?”
He was arrested without resistance.
Maria collapsed against the wall.
Daniel Vega was fifty-one.
Older.
Thinner.
A scar crossed his left cheek.
But alive.
Very alive.
Detective Morales questioned him for four hours.
Claire insisted on hearing the explanation afterward.
Daniel admitted faking his death.
He had paid a corrupt medical examiner’s assistant and used the body of an unidentified man killed in the crash.
The dental certification had been purchased later.
The scheme was criminal.
Daniel knew it.
“I was terrified.”
Claire stared at him through the interview-room glass.
“You abandoned your wife.”
“I know.”
“You let her believe you were dead.”
“I know.”
“You threatened Martin Vale.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Maria turned away.
He continued.
“Ethan told me to scare him. I went too far.”
“And Rosie?” Claire asked.
Daniel immediately looked up.
“I did not hurt that child.”
“Your fingerprint is in the cabinet.”
“I put the recorder there six years ago.”
“The card?”
“Yes.”
“You came back yesterday.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To get it.”
Claire stared.
“You knew Rosie had found the key.”
Daniel nodded.
“How?”
“Ethan called me.”
Silence.
“He knew you were alive?”
“He always knew.”
Maria made a broken sound.
Daniel looked at her.
“I’m sorry.”
She slapped him.
The sound cracked through the room.
Nobody stopped her.
“You let me bury you.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“I thought leaving would keep you safe.”
“You left me alone with the people I needed protection from!”
He lowered his head.
Morales resumed.
“Explain last night.”
Daniel described entering through an old service door whose code Ethan had provided years earlier and apparently never changed.
He went upstairs searching Evelyn’s room for the key.
He saw Rosie leaving.
“She saw me.”
“What did you do?” Claire demanded.
“I told her I was a friend.”
“Did she believe you?”
“No.”
“Then?”
“She ran toward the kitchen.”
Claire’s nails dug into her palms.
Daniel’s voice shook.
“I followed her because I panicked. She had the key.”
“Did you restrain her?”
“No.”
“Did you put tape on her mouth?”
“No.”
“Did you put her in the cabinet?”
“No.”
Claire stood.
“Then who did?”
“I don’t know.”
“Liar.”
“I swear.”
“Your coat fiber was there.”
“Because I opened the cabinet.”
Claire froze.
“When?”
“After Rosie was already inside.”
Silence.
Daniel looked sick.
“I came into the kitchen around midnight. I heard movement.”
Claire stared.
“You found her?”
“Yes.”
“And you left her there?”
His eyes filled.
“I opened the door. She saw me and started struggling. I realized whoever had put her there might still be in the house.”
“You left my daughter bound and gagged in a cabinet.”
“I was afraid.”
“You coward.”
“Yes.”
The simple admission made Claire hate him more.
“Did you see anyone?”
Daniel nodded.
Claire stopped.
“Who?”
“Someone came down the stairs.”
“Who?”
“I hid in the pantry.”
“Daniel.”
He looked toward the observation glass.
“I saw George.”
Claire’s heart stopped.
Maria gasped.
Daniel continued.
“He walked to the cabinet.”
“What did he do?”
“He stood there for maybe ten seconds.”
“And?”
“He touched the door.”
Claire’s knees felt weak.
“Did he open it?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did he know Rosie was inside?”
Daniel looked at her.
“I think he did.”
Claire left the room before anyone could stop her.
George was waiting in the hallway.
He saw her face.
“Claire—”
She walked up to him.
“My daughter was in that cabinet.”
“I know.”
“You were standing in front of it.”
George closed his eyes.
“Dad.”
His shoulders collapsed.
“Yes.”
Claire’s voice broke.
“You knew.”
“No.”
“Daniel saw you.”
“I heard something.”
“And you didn’t open it?”
George whispered, “I thought it was him.”
“Who?”
George looked toward the interview room.
“Ethan.”
Claire stared.
George’s eyes filled with horror.
“I thought Ethan was hiding evidence in the cabinet.”
“Why?”
“Because I had seen him there earlier.”
“When?”
“Eleven-forty.”
Claire’s heart lurched.
“What was he doing?”
May you like
George answered:
“He was kneeling in front of the cabinet with the door open.”
