Chapter 17 - Evelyn’s PasswordThe master password had not been used in six years.

According to the security company, Evelyn’s administrator profile remained dormant but active because nobody had ever deleted it.
The login occurred at 1:12 a.m.
Long after Ethan disabled the staircase camera.
The source device was inside the mansion.
Claire stared at the report.
“Who knew Mom’s password?”
George shook his head.
“I didn’t.”
Maria said nothing.
Claire looked at her.
“Maria?”
“I knew part of it.”
“How?”
“Mrs. Evelyn asked me to write it down once.”
“Did you log in?”
“No.”
“Where was it written?”
Maria’s face changed.
“In an old address book.”
“Where?”
“Mrs. Evelyn’s desk.”
The desk had been searched.
The address book was missing.
Claire felt sick.
One culprit had been identified.
But somebody else had tampered with evidence.
Someone who perhaps wanted Ethan blamed.
Detective Morales looked toward George.
“Your devices will need forensic examination.”
George handed over his phone and laptop willingly.
Maria did the same.
Claire surrendered hers.
The examination produced an unexpected result.
At 1:12 a.m., George’s laptop had been connected to the home network.
But it had been locked.
Maria’s phone showed no activity.
Claire’s tablet was upstairs with Rosie’s games.
A fourth device appeared on the router logs.
Unknown laptop.
Connected using the guest network.
Device name:
EV-PC.
Claire stared.
“Evelyn?”
Morales shook her head.
“Could be named anything.”
Daniel was brought back in.
When shown the device name, he went pale.
“That was her old laptop.”
Claire frowned.
“Mom’s?”
“Yes.”
“Where is it?”
George answered quietly.
“Storage.”
It wasn’t.
The box in storage was empty.
Claire’s frustration became anger.
“Who took it?”
No one knew.
Police searched the house again.
Nothing.
Then Rosie said something from the hallway.
“Grandma computer.”
Claire turned.
“What?”
Rosie pointed toward the kitchen.
“Man had Grandma computer.”
“Which man?”
“Ring man.”
Daniel stared.
“I didn’t.”
Rosie looked at him carefully.
Then shook her head.
“Not you.”
Everyone froze.
Claire crouched.
“You saw another man?”
Rosie nodded.
“With a black ring?”
Rosie nodded.
“But not Daniel?”
Another nod.
Maria whispered, “There are two rings.”
She rushed upstairs.
Police followed.
Maria returned with an old photograph.
Daniel stood beside another man outside Bennett Development headquarters.
Both wore identical black onyx rings.
“Who is he?” Claire asked.
Daniel looked at the photo.
His face hardened.
“Calvin Shaw.”
George whispered a curse.
Claire looked at him.
“You know him.”
“He was Evelyn’s attorney.”
“Was?”
George nodded.
“He handled estate planning.”
Claire stared.
“Why haven’t you mentioned him?”
“Because he retired after Evelyn died.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“He didn’t retire.”
George turned.
“What?”
“He went to work for Ethan.”
Ethan, questioned through his lawyer, denied it.
But corporate filings told another story.
A legal consulting company owned by Calvin Shaw had received $1.8 million from Red Harbor over six years.
Claire’s mother’s estate lawyer had been quietly paid by Claire’s husband.
The trust documents suddenly took on a different meaning.
Morales asked a forensic document examiner to inspect the BHM materials.
By evening, they found a problem.
One notarization page was genuine.
Another had been substituted.
The substituted page changed successor control in the event Claire became incapacitated.
Under the altered version, temporary control went not to George.
Not to Claire.
Not even directly to Ethan.
It went to an independent fiduciary.
Calvin Shaw.
Claire stared at the signature.
“Mom signed this?”
The examiner shook her head.
“The signature appears authentic.”
Claire frowned.
“Then?”
“The page was likely attached to a different document when she signed.”
George looked furious.
“Calvin built her estate plan.”
Morales nodded.
“He had access.”
Claire finally saw the larger structure.
Ethan wanted the board proxy.
Calvin controlled an altered trust provision.
George had hidden financial misconduct.
Daniel had hidden evidence.
Each man had been using the same family secrets for different purposes.
Her mother had died surrounded by people who wanted pieces of what she controlled.
A uniformed officer entered.
“We located Shaw.”
“Where?” Morales asked.
The officer hesitated.
“Hospital.”
Claire’s heart sank.
“What happened?”
“Car accident this afternoon.”
Daniel went still.
“Was anyone else in the car?”
“Yes.”
The officer looked at Claire.
“A briefcase was recovered.”
“What’s inside?”
“We don’t know yet.”

Then he added:
“But one of the items is a blue laptop registered to Evelyn Bennett.”
