Chapter 15 - Eleven FortyEthan’s alibi collapsed.

He had claimed to be in his office from ten until midnight.
His laptop showed activity.
But forensic analysis revealed automated data transfers that required no human presence.
George had seen Ethan near the cabinet at 11:40 p.m.
Daniel found Rosie inside shortly after midnight.
The security footage disappeared during the same period.
Claire felt the mystery narrowing.
Yet Ethan continued denying everything.
“I was looking for the hidden compartment.”
He sat in the interrogation room, arms folded.
“You knew about it?” Morales asked.
“Daniel told me years ago.”
“Then why didn’t you retrieve the card?”
“I thought Evelyn had moved it.”
“Why look last night?”
“Because Rosie had the key. I realized she must have opened Evelyn’s room. I thought maybe she had found something else.”
“Did Rosie enter the kitchen?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you put her in the cabinet?”
“No.”
“Did you see her?”
“No.”
George had seen Ethan.
Daniel had seen George.
Rosie had seen a man with Daniel’s ring.
But Daniel claimed she saw him only after someone else restrained her.
Claire sat in the adjoining room listening.
Something didn’t fit.
Rosie had drawn the ring man.
If Daniel had opened the cabinet after she was already inside, then she would indeed associate him with the cabinet.
Her fear did not prove he had put her there.
Ethan’s presence at 11:40 was more troubling.
But where was Maria?
Claire asked Morales.
They reconstructed the timeline.
10:30 — Ethan sees Rosie leaving Evelyn’s room.
10:45 — Maria finishes cleaning downstairs.
11:05 — George enters his study.
11:18 — Maria’s phone connects to Wi-Fi in the staff suite.
11:40 — George sees Ethan crouched near the cabinet.
11:47 — George returns upstairs.
Approximately midnight — Daniel enters kitchen and discovers Rosie.
12:08 — George hears movement and approaches cabinet.
12:20 — Daniel leaves property through service entrance.
After that, nothing.
Claire asked, “When was Rosie actually placed inside?”
Morales shook her head.
“We don’t know.”
“Could have been before eleven-forty.”
“Yes.”
“Or after.”
“Yes.”
Claire looked at the kitchen.
The cabinet suddenly seemed like the center of every lie.
A forensic technician called from the island.
They had found adhesive residue on the floor behind a decorative trash bin.
Tape.
Same type used on Rosie.
A latent fingerprint on the tape roll matched—
Maria.
Claire stared.
Maria was brought into the kitchen.
She looked at the evidence bag and began shaking.
“I use that tape for storage boxes.”
“Where was it kept?” Morales asked.
“Utility drawer.”
“Could anyone access it?”
“Everyone.”
Claire watched her.
“Where were you between eleven and midnight?”
“In my room.”
“Your phone was there.”
“So was I.”
“Can anyone confirm?”
“No.”
Maria looked at Claire.
“You think I did this.”
“I don’t know what to think.”
Maria began crying.
“I love Rosie.”
“So does Ethan, according to Ethan.”
“That’s different.”
“How?”
Maria looked toward George.
Claire saw it.
Another secret.
“Maria.”
“I promised.”
“Stop promising men you’ll lie to me.”
Maria flinched.
George whispered, “Tell her.”
Maria took a breath.
“At ten-fifty, Mr. George came to my room.”
Claire stared at her father.
“Why?”
“He gave me an envelope.”
“What envelope?”
George answered.
“Cash.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
“How much?”
“Twenty thousand.”
“Why?”
Maria looked miserable.
“He asked me to leave the house before morning.”
Silence.
Claire stared at George.
“You tried to send her away the same night Rosie disappeared?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
George sat down.
“Because I discovered Maria had Daniel’s key.”
Maria shook her head.
“You searched my room.”
“I saw the envelope from the bank.”
“So you bribed her?”
“I wanted her away from whatever Daniel had started.”
Claire clenched her jaw.
“And when you heard something in the cabinet, you assumed Ethan was hiding evidence?”
“Yes.”
“So you walked away.”
George’s voice broke.
“Yes.”
Claire looked at her father.
“You keep telling me your mistakes come from fear.”
“They do.”
“Fear didn’t leave Rosie inside.”
He went still.
“Cowardice did.”
George began crying.
Claire felt no satisfaction.
A technician entered carrying a laptop.
“Detective.”
Morales turned.
“We recovered part of last night’s deleted camera stream.”
Everyone froze.
“Which camera?”
“Top of the staircase.”
Claire’s heart pounded.
The technician pressed play.
At 11:52 p.m., Rosie appeared at the top of the stairs.
She was walking freely.
Nobody beside her.
She began descending.
At 11:53—
another figure entered frame.
Claire leaned closer.
The figure followed Rosie down the staircase.
And even before the face became visible—
May you like
Claire recognized the shirt.
It belonged to Ethan.
