Chapter 16 - What the Camera SawThe recovered footage lasted ninety-one seconds.

It was enough.

Rosie descended the staircase.

Ethan followed.

At the bottom, she turned toward the kitchen.

He reached for her shoulder.

The damaged recording froze.

Skipped.

Returned eleven seconds later.

Rosie was no longer visible.

Ethan stood alone.

He looked toward the camera.

Then walked directly beneath it.

The image went black.

Claire watched the clip three times.

On the fourth, she stood and walked away.

There was no dramatic breakdown.

No screaming.

No shattered glass.

Only a strange emptiness.

Morales followed her.

“Claire.”

“He did it.”

“The footage strongly places him with Rosie immediately before she disappeared from view.”

“He did it.”

“We still need to establish exactly what happened.”

Claire turned.

“Why are you saying that?”

“Because prosecutors need evidence, not conclusions.”

“He lied about seeing her.”

“Yes.”

“He lied about the bank.”

“Yes.”

“He erased the cameras.”

“We believe he accessed the system.”

“He was with her.”

“Yes.”

“And then she was found restrained.”

Morales held Claire’s gaze.

“Yes.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Ethan was arrested.

Charges initially included unlawful restraint, child endangerment, evidence tampering, and obstruction while prosecutors evaluated additional counts.

He requested an attorney.

He refused further questions.

But he asked to speak to Claire.

She almost refused.

Then she went.

Ethan stood behind the interview-room glass.

Handcuffed.

For the first time since she had known him, he looked small.

“I didn’t mean for this to happen,” he said.

Claire stared.

Five words.

Not a denial.

“What did you mean to happen?”

Ethan looked toward the camera.

“My lawyer told me not to talk.”

“Then don’t.”

She turned.

“Claire.”

She stopped.

“She wasn’t supposed to stay there.”

Claire looked back.

Everything inside her became cold.

“How long?”

“Ten minutes.”

Her voice barely worked.

“You put my five-year-old daughter into a cabinet for ten minutes?”

“I panicked.”

“Did you restrain her?”

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“She wouldn’t stop screaming.”

Claire recoiled.

He continued quickly.

“I never hurt her.”

“You bound her hands.”

“I needed her quiet.”

“You taped her mouth.”

“Her nose was clear. I made sure she could breathe.”

Claire stared at him in disbelief.

He heard himself.

He actually thought that helped.

“Why?”

“She had the key.”

“So?”

“And a piece of paper.”

“What paper?”

“She found something in Evelyn’s room.”

“What?”

“A copy of the trust transfer.”

Claire’s stomach dropped.

“The BHM trust?”

“Yes.”

“She’s five. She can’t understand that.”

“No, but she said she was taking it to you.”

“So you terrorized her.”

“I was trying to stop the board meeting from collapsing.”

Claire laughed once.

A terrible sound.

“You did this for money.”

“No. For control.”

“That’s worse.”

“You don’t understand what would happen if you took control.”

“Try me.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Bennett Development is insolvent.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

“The public numbers are false.”

“It’s privately held.”

“You know what I mean. The internal reports are false.”

“How bad?”

“One hundred and twenty million in hidden liabilities.”

Claire stared.

“That’s impossible.”

“Ask George.”

Claire thought of her father’s Northbridge scheme.

“Dad thought he saved the company.”

“He delayed the collapse.”

“And you?”

“I was trying to refinance before lenders discovered everything.”

“By taking voting control?”

“Yes.”

“Without telling me?”

“You would have panicked.”

Claire almost smiled at the cruelty of it.

“Apparently everyone in this family thinks lying to me is protection.”

Ethan looked down.

“I was going to let Rosie out.”

“But Daniel came.”

“I heard someone enter. I thought police or George had found me.”

“So you left her.”

“I went upstairs to disable the cameras.”

“And forgot her?”

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“I was going back.”

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire stepped toward the glass.

“Did you know Daniel found her?”

“No.”

“Did you know Dad heard her?”

“No.”

“You left her there all night.”

Ethan covered his face.

Claire felt nothing.

Then he lowered his hands.

“There’s something you still don’t understand.”

“What?”

“I didn’t erase the footage.”

Claire stared.

“I disabled the camera.”

“What’s the difference?”

“Someone else deleted the server files afterward.”

Claire’s pulse changed.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

He looked almost relieved.

“But you should.”

Claire turned to leave.

Ethan called after her.

“Claire.”

She stopped.

“Check the administrator logs.”

She looked back.

“The person who deleted the footage used your mother’s old master password.”
