Chapter 9 - Martin ValeMartin Vale agreed to speak by video call.

Detective Morales arranged it from the library.
Claire sat beside George.
Maria remained upstairs with Rosie.
Ethan was absent.
The screen flickered.
A man in his late fifties appeared.
Thin.
Gray-haired.
Nervous.
“Claire Bennett?”
“Yes.”
He stared at her for several seconds.
“You look like Evelyn.”
Claire’s throat tightened.
“You knew my mother?”
“I worked for her.”
“Dad said Ethan hired you.”
Martin gave a humorless smile.
“Technically Ethan introduced us. Your mother hired me privately.”
George leaned forward.
“What did you find?”
Martin’s eyes sharpened.
“You know what I found.”
“I knew about unauthorized transfers. Not all of them.”
Martin laughed quietly.
“George, you built the door. Ethan simply learned how to walk through it.”
Claire looked between them.
“Explain.”
Martin opened a folder.
“In 2017, Bennett Development faced liquidity problems. George created Northbridge Consulting to move money outside normal company controls.”
George nodded grimly.
“I know.”
“He intended to hide reserves from lenders.”
Claire turned.
“That sounds illegal.”
“It potentially was,” Martin said. “But that wasn’t the worst part.”
He held up a page.
“Once Northbridge existed, someone began generating fake vendor contracts. Red Harbor Systems. Mason Technical. Keene Logistics. Several others.”
“Ethan?”
“That’s what Evelyn suspected.”
“Could you prove it?”
“Almost.”
Martin leaned toward the camera.
“The money didn’t go directly to Ethan. It moved through layered LLCs. But I traced one chain to a brokerage account controlled by someone identified only through a private holding company.”
“BHM Capital?” Claire asked.
Martin went silent.
George inhaled sharply.
“You know it,” Claire said.
“Yes.”
“What is it?”
Martin looked frightened even across the screen.
“It was the end of the trail.”
“Who owns BHM?”
“I never learned.”
“We found stock certificates in Mom’s safe.”
Martin closed his eyes.
“Then Evelyn got further than I did.”
Detective Morales stepped closer.
“What about the threat?”
Martin’s face changed.
“Three days after Evelyn died, a man came to my house.”
“Describe him.”
“Tall. Black cap. Dark coat.”
Claire thought of Rosie’s drawing.
“Face?”
“Mostly shadowed.”
“Ring?”
“Black rectangular stone on his right hand.”
George looked down at his own onyx ring.
Martin saw.
“No. Not yours.”
George looked up.
“You’re sure?”
“Positive.”
“What did he say?” Morales asked.
“He showed me a photograph of my daughter leaving school.”
Claire felt sick.
“He told me to destroy my working files and disappear.”
“Did you?”
“I destroyed what I had at home. But Evelyn kept copies.”
“In box 317?”
“Possibly.”
Claire looked through the documents from the bank.
“Was there anything identifying BHM?”
“Not when I left.”
A small voice came from behind them.
“Maria has a ring.”
Claire turned.
Rosie stood in the doorway.
Maria was behind her.
“What did you say, sweetheart?”
Rosie pointed at Maria.
“Maria has black ring.”
Maria’s face went white.
George stood.
Detective Morales moved between them.
Maria immediately shook her head.
“No. No, please.”
“Show me your hands,” Morales said.
Maria held them up.
Only the silver band.
Rosie frowned.
“In your room.”
Maria began crying.
Claire’s pulse accelerated.
“What’s in your room?”
“Nothing.”
Morales and another officer searched the staff suite.
Five minutes later they returned.
The officer carried an evidence bag.
Inside was a men’s ring.
Black rectangular stone.
Maria leaned against the wall.
Claire stared at her.
“Whose is it?”
Maria covered her face.
“Maria.”
“It belonged to my husband.”
“You told me your husband died before you came to work here.”
“He did.”
“When?”
“Six years ago.”
Detective Morales examined the ring.
“What was his name?”
Maria lowered her hands.
“Daniel Vega.”
Martin Vale suddenly stood on the video screen.
His chair crashed backward.
“That’s him.”
Everyone turned.
Martin pointed at Maria.
“Vega.”
Maria stared at the screen.
May you like
Martin’s face had gone gray.
“Daniel Vega worked security for Ethan Cole.”
