Chapter 2 – The Son Who Swore He Was Innocent

# THE COLLINS LEGACY
## Chapter 2: The Son Who Swore He Was Innocent
Max shot across the marble floor like a missile.
The guests gasped.
Several people instinctively stepped aside as the powerful German Shepherd raced past Emma without slowing down.
Emma froze.
The half-open handbag slipped from her trembling hands.
Lipstick.
Keys.
A folded grocery list.
A wallet.
Everything spilled harmlessly onto the floor.
No diamond ring.
For a brief second...
No one understood what Max was doing.
Then the dog changed direction.
Straight toward Ryan Collins.
---
Ryan had been standing only a few feet from his mother.
His confident smile vanished the instant he realized Max was charging at him.
"Max!"
he shouted instinctively.
But the dog ignored the command.
With astonishing speed, Max lunged forward and clamped his teeth onto the fabric of Ryan's charcoal suit pocket.
Ryan stumbled backward.
"What are you doing?"
He tried to push the dog away.
The guests screamed.
Several men rushed forward, but Margaret raised her hand.
"Nobody touch Max!"
Her voice cut through the panic.
For years, Max had never attacked anyone without reason.
Not once.
Ryan pulled desperately against the dog.
The expensive suit pocket stretched.
Then...
Riiip!
The fabric tore open.
Something small and brilliant bounced across the white marble floor.
It spun once...
Twice...
Then stopped beneath the crystal chandelier.
A flawless diamond reflected the afternoon sunlight.
No one breathed.
Margaret slowly stepped forward.
Her hands trembled as she bent down.
She picked up the ring.
Her ring.
The Collins family diamond.
Silence engulfed the mansion.
Every guest slowly turned toward Ryan.
His face had gone completely white.
---
"No..."
Ryan whispered.
"This isn't possible."
Margaret stared at him.
The disappointment in her eyes hurt more than any accusation.
"Ryan..."
Her voice broke.
"Why?"
Ryan shook his head violently.
"I didn't steal it."
Nobody answered.
Jonathan Collins, Ryan's older brother, stepped forward.
"It came out of your pocket."
"I know what everyone saw."
Ryan looked around the room.
Dozens of faces.
Some shocked.
Some angry.
Some quietly satisfied.
Every single one believed the same thing.
He had been caught.
---
Emma remained frozen.
Only moments earlier, she had been the one accused.
Now the entire room had forgotten about her.
She looked at Ryan.
He looked terrified.
Not like a man whose plan had failed.
Like someone who genuinely had no explanation.
---
Margaret clutched the ring tightly.
"I trusted you."
Ryan took one step closer.
"Mom, please."
"I swear I don't know how it got there."
His voice cracked.
"It wasn't me."
Margaret said nothing.
She simply looked away.
That hurt Ryan more than if she had slapped him.
---
A security guard approached.
"Mrs. Collins..."
"Should we call the police?"
The room fell silent again.
Margaret closed her eyes.
She had spent thirty-two years raising Ryan.
Could she really hand her own son to the police?
Before she could answer...
Ryan spoke first.
"Call them."
Everyone looked at him.
Ryan slowly raised both hands.
"I have nothing to hide."
"If I'm guilty..."
"I'll accept the consequences."
"But I didn't steal that ring."
His voice was steady now.
Firm.
Determined.
"I want whoever framed me to be exposed."
---
Several guests exchanged uncertain glances.
That wasn't the reaction they expected.
Most guilty people begged.
Made excuses.
Ran.
Ryan did none of those things.
---
Jonathan frowned.
"If someone framed you..."
"Who?"
Ryan looked around the room.
"I don't know."
"But someone here wanted everyone to believe I was a thief."
---
Max quietly walked away from Ryan.
The dog didn't bark.
Didn't growl.
He simply returned to Emma's side.
Then...
He sat beside her.
Calmly.
Almost protectively.
Emma looked down at him.
She gently rested one trembling hand on his head.
For the first time that afternoon...
She smiled.
Very slightly.
"Thank you."
She whispered.
---
Margaret noticed.
So did everyone else.
The dog hadn't only exposed Ryan.
He had also saved Emma.
---
"I'm sorry."
Margaret walked toward the housekeeper.
"I should never have allowed anyone to accuse you."
Emma forced a weak smile.
"You believed me."
"I tried."
Margaret admitted softly.
"But I hesitated."
Emma lowered her eyes.
"Sometimes hesitation hurts just as much."
Those words filled the room with uncomfortable silence.
Margaret had no answer.
---
Thirty minutes later...
Police detectives arrived at Collins Manor.
Detective Laura Bennett, a veteran investigator with the Beverly Hills Police Department, carefully listened as everyone described what had happened.
She examined the ring.
Ryan's torn suit pocket.
Emma's handbag.
Max.
Nothing about the scene made sense.
Finally, she looked at Ryan.
"You understand why you're our primary suspect."
Ryan nodded.
"I do."
"But I'm innocent."
"Can you explain why the ring was in your pocket?"
"No."
"Did anyone get close enough to you today?"
Ryan thought carefully.
"Hundreds of people."
"It was a family gathering."
Laura nodded.
"Did you leave your jacket unattended?"
Ryan hesitated.
Then...
"Yes."
"When?"
"About twenty minutes before Mom noticed the ring was missing."
Every eye in the room turned toward him.
"You never mentioned that."
Jonathan said.
Ryan rubbed his forehead.
"I didn't think it mattered."
---
Detective Bennett wrote something in her notebook.
"It matters."
She turned toward the security chief.
"I need every surveillance recording."
The security chief looked uncomfortable.
"We're already downloading them."
---
An hour later...
Everyone gathered in the mansion's private media room.
The mansion had over forty security cameras.
Every hallway.
Every entrance.
Every major room.
If someone planted the ring...
The cameras would show it.
At least...
That was what everyone believed.
---
The technician loaded the recordings.
Camera after camera appeared on the large screen.
Guests talking.
Children playing.
Staff serving drinks.
Everything seemed normal.
Then...
The technician suddenly frowned.
"That's strange."
Detective Bennett looked over.
"What?"
"The footage between 3:12 and 3:28 is missing."
Silence.
"What do you mean missing?"
Jonathan asked.
The technician replayed the timeline.
The recording jumped.
Fifteen minutes had simply disappeared.
Not corrupted.
Deleted.
Someone had intentionally erased them.
---
Detective Bennett slowly looked around the room.
"Who has access to the security system?"
The security chief answered.
"Only three people."
"Myself."
"Mrs. Collins."
"And..."
He stopped speaking.
"And who?"
Laura asked.
The man swallowed.
"Ryan."
Every head turned toward him again.
Ryan looked stunned.
"I didn't touch the system."
"But you had access."
"Yes."
"Do you know the administrator password?"
"...Yes."
Another heavy silence filled the room.
The evidence seemed to be piling up against him.
Yet something still bothered Detective Bennett.
Professional instinct.
Years of experience.
Criminals usually tried to hide evidence.
This case felt different.
Almost...
Too perfect.
---
That evening...
Most of the guests finally left.
The celebration had become a disaster.
Margaret stood alone near the grand staircase, holding the diamond ring in one hand.
She no longer looked relieved.
She looked frightened.
Because deep inside...
She no longer believed the mystery had been solved.
She believed it had only begun.
---
Outside...
Emma quietly packed the few belongings she kept in the servants' quarters.
Margaret found her folding clothes into a small suitcase.
"What are you doing?"
Emma smiled sadly.
"I'm leaving."
Margaret's eyes widened.
"No."
"I won't let you."
Emma slowly zipped the suitcase.
"For twelve years..."
"This house felt like home."
She looked around the room.
"But today..."
"I learned how quickly trust can disappear."
Margaret reached for her hand.
"Please stay."
Emma gently squeezed it.
"I need time."
"You know I didn't steal your ring."
"I do."
"But the others don't."
She looked toward the mansion.
"And whoever planted that ring in Ryan's pocket..."
"Will eventually come after someone else."
Margaret felt a chill run through her body.
Emma continued quietly.
"The real thief is still inside this family."
---
At that exact moment...
Upstairs...
Someone wearing black leather gloves quietly entered the mansion's private security office.
Without turning on the lights...
The figure removed a tiny silver flash drive from inside the surveillance server.
The missing fifteen minutes...
Were now gone forever.
The figure whispered only four words before disappearing into the darkness.
"Phase one is complete."
