Chapter 4 – The Hidden Recording

# THE COLLINS LEGACY

## Chapter 4: The Ghost in the Security Footage

Detective Laura Bennett did not believe in ghosts.

She believed in evidence.

Fingerprints.

DNA.

Financial records.

Security footage.

Facts always defeated legends.

Yet the laboratory report sitting on her desk refused to make sense.

The second set of fingerprints found on the Collins diamond ring belonged to Edward Whitmore...

A man who had supposedly died seventeen years earlier.

There were only two possibilities.

The fingerprint database was wrong.

Or...

Someone had spent years convincing the world that Edward Whitmore was dead.

Neither explanation comforted her.

---

At seven o'clock that evening...

Laura drove back to Collins Manor.

The mansion was quieter than she had ever seen it.

Most of the staff had gone home.

Only a handful of lights remained on.

Margaret welcomed her into the library.

"You found something."

It wasn't a question.

Laura nodded.

"I need to ask you about Edward Whitmore."

Margaret frowned.

"I've already told you..."

"I've never heard that name."

Laura placed the old black-and-white photograph on the table.

"This was taken thirty-four years ago."

"It shows your husband standing beside Edward Whitmore."

Margaret studied the picture.

Her hands slowly began to shake.

"I..."

She whispered.

"I remember this day."

Laura leaned forward.

"You do?"

Margaret nodded.

"It was Charles' fortieth birthday."

"There were investors."

"Business partners."

Lawyers."

She pointed toward Edward.

"He introduced himself using another name."

"What name?"

Margaret closed her eyes, searching her memory.

Then she whispered two words.

"Edward Blake."

Laura immediately wrote them down.

An alias.

The mystery had just grown larger.

---

Meanwhile...

Ryan couldn't stop thinking about the letter he had found inside his father's desk.

**Never trust the person who wants the ring the most.**

Who wanted it?

Margaret had never announced her successor.

Every member of the Collins family had something to gain.

Ryan spread an old family photo album across his dining table.

He carefully studied every photograph.

Birthday parties.

Christmas dinners.

Corporate galas.

Then one picture caught his attention.

It had been taken twelve years earlier.

Margaret wore the diamond ring.

Jonathan stood beside her.

Ryan stood on her other side.

Behind them...

Emma carried a birthday cake.

Max, still a young German Shepherd, sat at Emma's feet.

Ryan looked closer.

There was another person in the background.

A man.

Standing near the staircase.

His face was partially hidden by a marble column.

Ryan didn't recognize him.

But something about him felt strangely familiar.

He flipped through more photographs.

Again.

And again.

The same man appeared.

Always in the background.

Always watching.

Never smiling.

Never introduced.

Almost invisible.

Ryan's pulse quickened.

Whoever he was...

He had been inside Collins Manor for years.

---

The next morning...

Emma Carter received an unexpected visitor.

It was Detective Bennett.

"I hope I'm not disturbing you."

Emma invited her inside.

Laura looked around the modest apartment.

Everything Emma owned fit comfortably inside one small living room.

It was impossible to imagine this woman stealing a ring worth millions.

"I need your help."

Laura said.

Emma looked surprised.

"My help?"

Laura nodded.

"I don't think the theft started two days ago."

"I think it started years ago."

Emma remained silent.

Laura noticed.

"You know something."

Emma looked toward the window.

For nearly a minute...

She said nothing.

Finally...

"There was someone."

Laura immediately leaned forward.

"Who?"

"A man."

Emma whispered.

"I saw him several times."

"Where?"

"Inside the mansion."

Laura frowned.

"Was he a guest?"

Emma slowly shook her head.

"No."

"He always came after everyone went to sleep."

The detective's expression hardened.

"What was he doing?"

"I don't know."

"But Mr. Charles always met him in the library."

"When?"

"Late at night."

"How often?"

Emma thought carefully.

"Maybe once every few months."

Laura's notebook was already filling with questions.

"Did you ever tell anyone?"

Emma smiled sadly.

"I was the housekeeper."

"No one ever asked."

---

That afternoon...

Detective Bennett obtained a warrant to recover deleted files from the Collins security server.

The technician spent hours rebuilding damaged data.

Finally...

One corrupted video file appeared.

Only thirty-two seconds survived.

The timestamp matched the missing fifteen minutes.

Laura pressed play.

The footage was blurry.

Distorted.

But recognizable.

The grand living room.

Margaret speaking with guests.

Emma walking toward the kitchen.

Ryan talking with Jonathan.

Nothing unusual.

Then...

A shadow crossed the screen.

A man wearing a dark baseball cap.

His face hidden.

He walked directly behind Ryan.

Only for two seconds.

His right hand briefly touched Ryan's suit jacket.

Then...

The footage froze.

The screen filled with digital static.

The video ended.

Laura replayed it three times.

The mysterious man had been close enough to place something inside Ryan's pocket.

Or remove something from it.

She finally had proof.

Ryan could have been framed.

---

When Laura shared the footage with Ryan later that evening...

He stared at the paused image.

"I've never seen him before."

Laura wasn't convinced.

"Look closer."

Ryan zoomed in.

The man's face remained hidden.

But one detail stood out.

A silver wristwatch.

Expensive.

Unusual.

Ryan's eyes widened.

"I know that watch."

Laura looked up.

"You do?"

Ryan nodded slowly.

"My father owned one exactly like it."

Silence.

"No..."

Ryan whispered.

"He didn't own one."

"He gave one away."

Laura frowned.

"To who?"

Ryan closed his eyes.

Trying to remember.

Then...

His eyes opened.

"Edward."

Laura felt another chill.

"Edward Whitmore?"

Ryan nodded.

"When I was sixteen..."

"I heard Dad say something strange."

"What?"

Ryan swallowed.

"He told Mom..."

'Edward will come back one day to collect what's his.'"

Neither of them spoke.

Because suddenly...

Edward Whitmore no longer sounded like a dead businessman.

He sounded like someone who had never truly left.

---

That night...

Inside Collins Manor...

Max refused to sleep.

The German Shepherd paced back and forth in front of the old library.

Again.

And again.

Margaret tried calling him.

"Come here, Max."

The dog ignored her.

Instead...

He scratched repeatedly at the wooden floor beneath an antique Persian rug.

Margaret frowned.

"What is it?"

Curious, she pulled the heavy rug aside.

Underneath...

She discovered something she had never noticed before.

A narrow brass ring embedded into the hardwood floor.

Attached to...

A hidden trapdoor.

Her heart began pounding.

She called Jonathan immediately.

Within minutes, he arrived carrying a flashlight.

Together, they lifted the trapdoor.

A narrow stone staircase disappeared into darkness beneath the mansion.

Cold air drifted upward.

The smell of dust and old wood filled the room.

Jonathan shined the flashlight down the steps.

"There shouldn't be anything under this house."

Margaret whispered,

"I've lived here for forty-three years..."

"And I never knew this existed."

Max barked once.

The first bark anyone had heard from him since the ring disappeared.

Then...

Without hesitation...

The German Shepherd ran down into the darkness.

Margaret and Jonathan exchanged nervous glances.

They followed him.

Neither of them realized...

Someone else was already waiting below.
