Chapter 6 – The Truth Behind The Diamond Ring

# THE COLLINS LEGACY
## Chapter 6: The First Vault
Nobody spoke for nearly a minute.
The blueprint remained spread across the old oak table inside the underground chamber.
Every pair of eyes was fixed on the words written in faded red ink.
**Vault B.**
If this room was only the second vault...
Then where was the first?
And more importantly...
What had been hidden there for decades?
---
Detective Laura Bennett carefully rolled the blueprint back onto the table.
"We need to seal this chamber immediately."
Jonathan frowned.
"Seal it?"
Laura nodded.
"Someone was here less than an hour ago."
"They escaped."
"If we don't secure this place..."
"They'll come back."
Ryan looked toward the dark tunnel where the hooded figure had disappeared.
"They'll come back anyway."
---
Laura understood what he meant.
Whoever had entered the underground passage wasn't searching randomly.
They knew exactly where to go.
Which meant...
This mystery had been planned long before the diamond ring disappeared.
---
Upstairs...
Police officers quietly searched the mansion.
Every entrance.
Every hallway.
Every hidden passage.
Nothing.
The mysterious intruder had vanished.
Almost as if the mansion itself had swallowed him.
---
That evening...
Ryan couldn't stop thinking about the pocket watch.
He sat alone in his father's old study.
The silver watch rested in his hand.
He opened it again.
Charles Collins.
Edward Whitmore.
Young.
Smiling.
Standing shoulder to shoulder.
Friends.
Not enemies.
Everything Ryan had been told about Edward suddenly felt incomplete.
His father had never mentioned him.
Margaret claimed she barely remembered him.
Yet someone had hidden photographs.
Letters.
An underground vault.
Why?
---
Ryan carefully examined the watch under the desk lamp.
At first glance...
It looked ordinary.
But when he pressed the winding crown...
Nothing happened.
The mechanism felt stuck.
He turned it over.
On the back...
Barely visible beneath years of scratches...
Were three tiny engraved letters.
**A.W.C.**
Ryan frowned.
Not E.W.
A.W.C.
He tried pressing the letters with his thumb.
Click.
The back cover suddenly released.
Inside...
A folded piece of yellow paper had been hidden behind the clock mechanism.
Ryan unfolded it carefully.
It wasn't a letter.
It was half of a map.
---
Before he could study it further...
Someone knocked on the study door.
Detective Bennett.
Ryan immediately covered the map.
Laura noticed.
"You found something."
Ryan hesitated.
Then slowly handed her the paper.
Laura unfolded it.
"It looks like part of the estate."
Ryan nodded.
"But only half."
Laura examined the torn edge.
"The other half was removed."
Ryan looked at the blueprint from Vault B lying nearby.
Slowly...
He placed the map over it.
The torn edges matched perfectly.
The hidden map completed part of the blueprint.
A narrow red line now continued from Vault B...
Toward another location beneath the mansion.
The destination was clearly marked.
**Vault A.**
---
Jonathan entered moments later.
"What did you find?"
Ryan pointed at the map.
"This is where the first vault is."
Jonathan followed the line with his finger.
"It ends..."
He looked up.
"Under the grand living room."
Silence.
Everyone remembered where the diamond ring had fallen from Ryan's pocket.
The very room where the entire mystery had begun.
---
Margaret slowly entered the study.
She looked exhausted.
Laura showed her the completed map.
Margaret stared at it in disbelief.
"I've lived here for forty-three years."
"I've renovated this house twice."
"And I never knew..."
She couldn't finish the sentence.
---
Ryan suddenly remembered something.
"The chandelier."
Everyone looked at him.
"What about it?"
Ryan walked to the blueprint.
"The line doesn't stop under the living room."
"It stops exactly..."
He measured the distance.
"...beneath the center of the crystal chandelier."
Laura looked impressed.
"If that's correct..."
"The entrance isn't in the floor."
"It's hidden above it."
---
An hour later...
Electricians carefully lowered the enormous crystal chandelier using its maintenance system.
It took nearly twenty minutes.
The priceless fixture slowly descended from the high ceiling.
When it finally reached the floor...
Jonathan looked upward.
There...
Hidden behind the chandelier's mounting plate...
Was a circular brass mechanism.
Almost invisible.
Laura climbed the maintenance ladder.
She brushed away decades of dust.
An engraved inscription appeared.
**"Only truth opens the first door."**
Jonathan frowned.
"What does that even mean?"
Nobody answered.
---
Ryan suddenly remembered the diamond ring.
"The ring."
Margaret looked at him.
"What?"
Ryan pointed toward the circular mechanism.
"The crest is the same size."
Margaret carefully removed the diamond ring from its velvet box.
She climbed the ladder beside Laura.
The ring fit perfectly into the brass opening.
Click.
A loud metallic sound echoed through the mansion.
Then...
Nothing.
No hidden door.
No movement.
Jonathan sighed.
"It didn't work."
Laura wasn't convinced.
"It unlocked something."
---
Max suddenly barked.
Everyone turned.
The German Shepherd was no longer looking upward.
He was staring at the marble fireplace.
His ears stood alert.
He barked again.
Ryan walked toward him.
The dog pawed repeatedly at the fireplace's carved stone eagle.
Ryan touched the eagle's head.
It moved.
A hidden lever.
He pulled it.
Deep beneath the floor...
Massive gears began turning.
The marble fireplace slowly slid sideways.
A dark staircase appeared.
Nobody spoke.
The first vault had finally revealed itself.
---
Laura drew her flashlight.
"Nobody goes down alone."
Ryan nodded.
"I'm coming."
"So am I."
Jonathan said.
Margaret stepped forward.
"This is my family's secret."
"I'm going too."
Laura hesitated.
Then agreed.
---
The staircase led much deeper than the first chamber.
The air was colder.
The walls smoother.
Unlike Vault B...
This passage had clearly been maintained.
Someone had used it recently.
Fresh footprints covered the dust.
---
After nearly five minutes...
They reached an enormous circular steel door.
Far larger than the previous vault.
Across the center...
The Collins family crest had been carved into solid bronze.
But beneath it...
Another name was engraved.
**Whitmore & Collins Trust**
Jonathan stared.
"There were never two family names."
Ryan slowly shook his head.
"There were."
"We just never knew."
---
Laura carefully pushed the heavy door.
It opened without resistance.
Inside...
The room was immaculate.
No dust.
No cobwebs.
No signs of age.
Electric lights suddenly switched on automatically.
Someone had restored the vault.
Recently.
Very recently.
---
Shelves lined the walls.
Hundreds of neatly organized files.
Old accounting books.
Property deeds.
Photographs.
Boxes labeled with years dating back nearly fifty years.
In the center stood a polished mahogany desk.
On top of it...
A single envelope.
Ryan slowly picked it up.
Across the front, elegant handwriting read:
**"For Margaret Collins."**
Margaret's hands trembled as she opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
She recognized the signature instantly.
Charles Collins.
Her late husband.
---
She began reading aloud.
*"Margaret..."*
*"If you are reading this..."*
*"Then I have failed to tell you the truth while I was alive."*
Tears filled her eyes.
*"Everything our family believes about the Collins fortune is incomplete."*
*"The wealth never belonged to me alone."*
*"Half of everything legally belongs to the Whitmore family."*
The room fell silent.
Ryan stared at his father's handwriting.
Jonathan slowly lowered his head.
Margaret continued reading.
*"I made a promise to Edward."*
*"I broke that promise."*
*"Someone forced me to."*
Laura frowned.
"Someone?"
Margaret turned the page.
Her voice weakened.
*"The person responsible was never Edward..."*
*"It was someone inside our own family."*
Everyone looked at one another.
Inside the family?
Ryan felt a chill.
If Charles Collins had been telling the truth...
Then the enemy had never come from outside.
The betrayal had always begun at home.
Before anyone could speak...
The lights inside the vault suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
A metallic door slammed shut behind them.
Someone laughed.
A calm...
Confident...
Familiar laugh.
Then a voice echoed through the darkness.
"Welcome to the part of the story your father never wanted you to see."
Ryan recognized the voice instantly.
His face turned pale.
"No..."
"It can't be..."
Because the voice belonged to someone the entire Collins family trusted.
