Chapter 5 – The Family Starts Falling Apart

# THE COLLINS LEGACY

## Chapter 5: The Hidden Chamber

Max disappeared into the darkness without hesitation.

His powerful paws echoed against the old stone steps beneath Collins Manor.

Margaret gripped the flashlight tightly.

Jonathan stayed close behind her.

Neither of them spoke.

The silence beneath the mansion felt unnatural.

Heavy.

As if the underground passage had been waiting decades for someone to find it.

---

The staircase seemed endless.

Dust covered every step.

Cobwebs stretched between the stone walls.

The deeper they descended...

The colder the air became.

Finally...

The staircase opened into a long underground corridor.

The walls were made of old limestone.

Rusted lanterns hung from iron hooks.

The passage looked far older than the mansion above.

Jonathan slowly turned in a circle.

"This place..."

"It can't be part of the original house."

Margaret nodded.

"My grandfather bought this estate after the mansion was rebuilt."

She looked around in disbelief.

"Whoever built this tunnel did it long before the Collins family lived here."

---

Ahead...

Max stopped.

He stood perfectly still in front of a heavy steel door.

The German Shepherd didn't bark.

He simply stared at it.

Waiting.

Jonathan pushed gently against the door.

It didn't move.

Locked.

Then Margaret noticed something strange.

Embedded into the center of the door...

Was the exact same family crest engraved on the diamond ring.

A soaring eagle holding a diamond in its claws.

Margaret's breathing slowed.

"I've only seen this symbol once."

Jonathan looked at her.

"On the ring."

She nodded.

"And inside your grandfather's old journal."

---

Jonathan searched the surrounding wall.

After several minutes...

He found a small hidden lever disguised as part of the stonework.

The heavy steel door groaned loudly.

Slowly...

It swung open.

A stale gust of air rushed toward them.

Max entered first.

---

The room beyond looked untouched.

Shelves filled with dusty ledgers lined every wall.

Old paintings leaned against wooden crates.

A massive oak table occupied the center.

Everything was covered by decades of dust.

Except...

One thing.

A leather chair.

It was perfectly clean.

Someone had been sitting there recently.

Jonathan immediately noticed.

"We're not the first people down here."

Margaret's stomach tightened.

Someone already knew this chamber existed.

---

Max walked toward the far wall.

He sniffed carefully.

Then scratched once.

Jonathan pointed his flashlight.

Hidden behind an old bookshelf...

Was a small black safe.

Modern.

Far newer than everything else in the room.

Someone had installed it recently.

---

Before they could examine it...

A voice echoed from behind them.

"I wouldn't touch that."

Margaret spun around.

Detective Laura Bennett stood in the doorway.

She had arrived at the mansion minutes earlier and followed the open trapdoor after hearing Jonathan call for help.

"You should've called me before opening a hidden chamber."

Jonathan exhaled.

"We barely knew what we'd found."

Laura walked slowly around the room.

Her trained eyes examined everything.

Nothing had been disturbed...

Except the chair.

She crouched beside it.

Fresh footprints.

Someone had been there within the last twenty-four hours.

---

She carefully opened the safe.

It wasn't locked.

Inside...

There was only one object.

A faded leather notebook.

No cash.

No jewelry.

No documents.

Just a notebook.

Laura opened the first page.

Written in elegant handwriting were four words.

**Property of Edward Whitmore.**

Silence filled the chamber.

Margaret slowly sat down.

"So he was real."

Laura looked at her.

"He was very real."

---

Back upstairs...

Ryan received a phone call from Detective Bennett.

"You need to come to the mansion."

"What happened?"

"We found something."

"What?"

"A hidden room."

Ryan didn't hesitate.

"I'm on my way."

---

Twenty-five minutes later...

Ryan entered the underground chamber.

His eyes widened.

"I grew up here."

"I never knew this existed."

Laura handed him the notebook.

"You should read this."

Ryan carefully turned the brittle pages.

Most entries described business meetings.

Land purchases.

Construction plans.

Nothing unusual.

Then...

One page stopped him.

It was dated thirty-one years earlier.

The handwriting became rushed.

Almost desperate.

Ryan read aloud.

*"Charles believes the ring belongs to the Collins family.*

*He is wrong.*

*The ring is only the key.*

*The real inheritance remains hidden until the rightful heir returns."*

Ryan looked up.

"The ring is a key?"

Laura nodded slowly.

"It appears we've been investigating the wrong object."

---

Margaret frowned.

"My husband never told me anything about this."

Laura closed the notebook.

"Maybe he intended to."

"But never had the chance."

---

Ryan continued reading.

The next several pages had been torn out.

Deliberately removed.

Only jagged edges remained.

Someone had taken the most important information.

Recently.

---

Jonathan clenched his fists.

"Whoever deleted the security footage..."

"...also came down here."

Laura agreed.

"And they knew exactly what they were looking for."

---

Just then...

Max suddenly lifted his head.

His ears stood upright.

He began growling.

A low...

Dangerous growl.

Everyone froze.

The dog wasn't looking at them.

He was staring toward the far end of the tunnel.

Darkness.

Complete darkness.

Then...

Footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Someone was walking toward them.

Jonathan raised the flashlight.

"Who's there?"

No answer.

Only footsteps.

Closer.

Closer.

Max barked violently.

The beam of light finally revealed a figure wearing a black hooded jacket.

The stranger immediately turned and ran.

"Stop!"

Ryan shouted.

He sprinted after the figure.

Jonathan followed.

The chase echoed through the underground passage.

Sharp turns.

Narrow corridors.

Old wooden beams.

The mysterious intruder clearly knew the tunnels.

Too well.

Ryan nearly caught him at one corner.

But the man shoved over an old storage shelf.

Wood crashed onto the floor, blocking the path.

By the time Ryan climbed over the debris...

The tunnel ahead was empty.

No footsteps.

No shadows.

Nothing.

The stranger had vanished.

---

Breathing heavily, Ryan looked around.

Then he noticed something on the ground.

A small silver object.

He picked it up.

It was an old pocket watch.

Its lid had popped open during the chase.

Inside...

Was a faded photograph.

Ryan stared at it in disbelief.

The picture showed two young men smiling beside a construction site.

One was unmistakably his father, Charles Collins.

The other...

Matched the old photographs of Edward Whitmore.

Friends.

Not rivals.

Not enemies.

Friends.

Ryan slowly whispered,

"My father lied to all of us..."

---

Back inside the hidden chamber...

Detective Bennett made another discovery.

Hidden beneath the oak table was a narrow wooden drawer.

Inside lay a yellowed blueprint of the Collins estate.

She spread it across the table.

Everyone gathered around.

The underground chamber they had discovered was clearly marked.

But there was something else.

Far beneath it...

Another room.

Larger.

Much larger.

Connected by a tunnel that ended directly beneath the mansion's grand living room.

In the corner of the blueprint, someone had written a short note in red ink.

**"Vault B."**

Margaret looked confused.

"If this is Vault B..."

Laura slowly finished the sentence.

"...then somewhere beneath this property..."

"...there must also be a Vault A."

The room fell silent.

They had believed the mystery was finally unfolding.

Instead...

They had only uncovered half of it.

And whoever escaped through the tunnels...

Was almost certainly heading toward the first vault.

The place where the real Collins secret had been hidden for decades.
