Chapter 7 – The Real Mastermind

# THE COLLINS LEGACY

## Chapter 7: The Man Everyone Trusted

The steel door slammed shut with a deafening boom.

Darkness swallowed the vault.

Margaret instinctively reached for Ryan's arm.

Jonathan pulled out his phone, but there was no signal.

Only the faint beam of Detective Laura Bennett's flashlight cut through the darkness.

Then...

The same calm voice echoed again.

"You've all spent two days chasing a stolen ring."

A soft chuckle followed.

"When the ring was never the prize."

Ryan's heartbeat pounded in his ears.

He knew that voice.

He had heard it countless times growing up.

At birthdays.

Christmas dinners.

Family celebrations.

It was impossible.

Laura slowly swept her flashlight across the room.

"Come out."

Instead of answering...

The emergency lights flickered on.

Dim yellow light filled the underground vault.

A man stepped from behind a row of filing cabinets.

He was dressed in an immaculate dark suit.

Gray hair.

Thin glasses.

Calm posture.

Not a criminal.

Not a stranger.

**Arthur Greene.**

The Collins family's attorney.

For twenty-eight years.

Margaret stared at him in disbelief.

"Arthur..."

Ryan whispered,

"You?"

Jonathan took an angry step forward.

"You've been behind all of this?"

Arthur smiled faintly.

"No."

"I've simply been protecting the truth."

---

Nobody moved.

Arthur Greene had handled every Collins legal matter since before Ryan was born.

He drafted Charles Collins' will.

Managed the family trust.

Oversaw every inheritance document.

Margaret trusted him almost as much as she had trusted her late husband.

Laura quietly reached for her service weapon.

Arthur noticed.

"Detective..."

"If I wanted any of you dead..."

"You never would have reached this room."

His confidence unsettled everyone.

---

Ryan clenched his fists.

"You framed me."

Arthur looked genuinely disappointed.

"No."

"I only allowed everyone to believe what they wanted."

Ryan stepped closer.

"The ring was in my pocket."

"Yes."

"But I didn't put it there."

"You deleted the security footage."

Arthur nodded.

"I did."

Laura narrowed her eyes.

"So you admit obstructing a criminal investigation."

Arthur looked directly at her.

"I admit protecting something far more valuable than a diamond."

---

Margaret held Charles' letter tightly.

"Why?"

Arthur sighed.

"Because Charles asked me to."

Silence.

Ryan shook his head.

"That's impossible."

Arthur reached into his briefcase.

He removed a sealed envelope.

Its paper had yellowed with age.

Across the front...

Charles Collins' handwriting.

**To Arthur — Open Only If The Vault Is Discovered**

Margaret felt tears forming again.

Arthur carefully unfolded the letter.

"I've carried this for twenty-one years."

He began reading aloud.

*"Arthur..."*

*"If anyone ever reaches Vault A..."*

*"Tell them everything."*

*"No more lies."*

Arthur lowered the paper.

"I honored Charles' wishes."

Ryan looked furious.

"Then start talking."

---

Arthur took a slow breath.

"The Collins fortune..."

"...was never stolen from Edward Whitmore."

"It was surrendered."

Nobody understood.

Laura frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Arthur walked toward an old framed map hanging on the wall.

"In 1989..."

"Charles Collins and Edward Whitmore created a joint investment company."

"They were equal partners."

"They built everything together."

Jonathan interrupted.

"Then why has nobody ever heard of Whitmore?"

Arthur's expression darkened.

"Because someone erased him."

---

Margaret whispered,

"Who?"

Arthur slowly turned.

"Your brother."

Silence.

Margaret blinked.

"My brother..."

"Michael Bennett."

The name hit Margaret like a physical blow.

Michael had died nearly fifteen years earlier.

He had always been charming.

Helpful.

Loved by everyone.

Arthur continued.

"Michael secretly forged legal documents."

"He transferred company assets."

"Created shell corporations."

"And convinced Charles that Edward had betrayed him."

Ryan stared.

"My uncle destroyed everything?"

Arthur nodded.

"Charles believed the lies."

"So did everyone else."

---

Laura slowly pieced everything together.

"So Edward disappeared..."

"Because everyone believed he had stolen the company."

Arthur nodded again.

"He lost everything."

"His business."

"His reputation."

"His family."

Margaret's voice trembled.

"And Charles?"

Arthur closed his eyes.

"He learned the truth too late."

---

Ryan remembered the old photograph inside the pocket watch.

His father and Edward smiling together.

Friends.

Now it finally made sense.

---

Jonathan frowned.

"If Charles knew the truth..."

"Why didn't he tell us?"

Arthur looked toward Charles' letter.

"He wanted to."

"But someone threatened your family."

---

Laura stepped closer.

"Who?"

Arthur answered quietly.

"Michael."

"He said if Charles exposed the fraud..."

"...he would destroy the Collins family."

Ryan frowned.

"My uncle is dead."

Arthur nodded.

"Yes."

"But before he died..."

"He made sure someone else continued protecting the secret."

The room became silent again.

Laura immediately understood.

"There was another person."

Arthur didn't answer.

His silence was answer enough.

---

Max suddenly growled.

Everyone turned.

The German Shepherd wasn't looking at Arthur.

He was staring toward the vault entrance.

The steel door.

A faint metallic click echoed.

Arthur's face changed instantly.

For the first time...

He looked genuinely frightened.

"No..."

He whispered.

"He found us."

Ryan frowned.

"Who?"

Arthur looked directly at him.

"The one person Charles feared more than Michael."

Before anyone could ask another question...

The vault lights exploded.

Glass shattered across the floor.

Complete darkness returned.

Then...

A gunshot echoed through the chamber.

Margaret screamed.

Jonathan ducked behind the desk.

Laura drew her weapon.

"Police!"

Another shot.

A bullet struck a filing cabinet inches from Ryan's head.

Max lunged toward the darkness, barking furiously.

A man cried out in pain.

Heavy footsteps rushed toward the exit.

Laura fired once.

The bullet ricocheted harmlessly off the steel wall.

The intruder escaped.

Seconds later...

The emergency generator activated.

Dim red lights illuminated the vault.

Everyone looked around frantically.

Arthur Greene lay on the floor.

Blood spread across his white shirt.

Ryan rushed to him.

"Arthur!"

Arthur was still breathing.

Barely.

He grabbed Ryan's sleeve with surprising strength.

His lips trembled.

"He..."

Ryan leaned closer.

"Who?"

Arthur coughed violently.

Blood stained his lips.

Then he whispered three words.

"Trust... no... one..."

His hand fell limp.

Ryan froze.

Laura immediately checked for a pulse.

Still alive.

But fading fast.

Paramedics were already on the way.

---

As officers secured the vault minutes later, Detective Bennett walked slowly around the room.

The gunman had escaped.

Again.

But this time...

He had left something behind.

Near the steel doorway lay a black leather glove.

Laura carefully picked it up with an evidence bag.

Something inside felt unusual.

She turned it over.

A small folded photograph slipped out.

It showed a little boy standing beside Charles Collins.

The boy looked about eight years old.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written in blue ink:

**"The true Whitmore heir."**

Laura stared at the picture.

Ryan looked over her shoulder.

"I've never seen him before."

Margaret slowly stepped closer.

Her face drained of color.

She recognized the child immediately.

"No..."

She whispered.

"It can't be."

Jonathan looked at her.

"You know him?"

Margaret's voice shook.

"I held him in my arms once..."

"But everyone said..."

"...he died with his parents."

Silence filled the vault.

Because if the child in the photograph had survived...

Then Edward Whitmore's bloodline had never ended.

Which meant...

The rightful heir to half of the Collins fortune...

Might still be alive.

And someone was willing to kill...

To make sure that secret stayed buried.
