Chapter 1 - The Man by the Lake“If you disappear, your mother’s going to be devastated, isn’t she?”

Zoey stared up at her father through tears.
Seven years old.
Brown skin streaked with dirt.
Long curls tangled around her face.
Her wrists and ankles were restrained, and a heavy chain stretched from beside her body toward the large boulder sitting inches from the lake.
“Daddy…”
Derek looked down without emotion.
The private lake behind Renee’s mansion had always been beautiful.
Mature trees surrounded the wide lawn. Sunlight glittered across the water. The house stood far behind them, elegant and quiet.
Zoey had fed ducks here.
She had learned to skip stones here.
Her mother had married Julian on the lawn less than a year earlier.
Now Derek stood between Zoey and the mansion as though none of those memories mattered.
Zoey twisted desperately.
“Please.”
Derek crouched slightly.
“And if the grief drives her crazy…”
A faint smile crossed his face.
“You think her new husband will still want her?”
Zoey’s eyes widened.
“Julian didn’t do anything.”
The smile vanished.
“I didn’t ask you.”
“He loves Mom.”
Derek laughed once.
Cold.
“You’re seven. You don’t know what love is.”
Zoey began crying harder.
She had heard Derek say things about Julian before.
That Julian wanted Renee’s money.
That Julian was pretending to care about Zoey.
That sooner or later he would leave.
But in recent weeks the words had changed.
Derek had begun asking questions.
What papers did Julian keep in the upstairs office?
Had Renee spoken about the bank?
Had anyone mentioned an audit?
Zoey did not know what an audit was.
She only knew that three nights earlier she had seen her father standing inside Renee’s study with a red folder he was not supposed to have.
He had been photographing pages with his phone.
One page had Zoey’s name on it.
Another showed numbers.
A lot of numbers.
Derek discovered her watching.
Since then, he had not stopped asking what she saw.
Zoey had told him nothing.
That morning he picked her up from summer camp early, claiming Renee had asked him to.
She believed him.
She still wanted to believe her father.
Even after everything.
Especially after everything.
Now the lake was only feet away.
Derek stood.
Zoey followed his eyes toward the boulder.
“No.”
Her voice changed.
“Dad…”
He placed one shoe against the stone.
“No!”
Zoey pulled against the restraints.
“Dad, please!”
Derek pushed.
The boulder shifted.
Zoey screamed.
It rolled farther.
Then disappeared over the bank.
The chain snapped tight.
Zoey’s body slid across the grass.
Her fingers clawed at the ground.
“DADDY!”
Derek did not move.
The chain pulled her across the muddy shoreline.
Then into the lake.
Cold water swallowed her scream.
The boulder struck a shallow rocky shelf beneath the surface rather than continuing into deeper water.
Zoey disappeared beneath the first violent splash.
Derek remained on shore.
For several seconds, nothing moved except widening circles across the lake.
Then Derek smiled.
Not because he was happy.
Because he believed the problem had finally become someone else’s tragedy.
He straightened his shirt.
Turned toward the mansion.
And stopped.
Far across the lawn, near the tree line, someone stood partially hidden behind a massive oak.
A phone was raised.
Pointed directly at him.
Derek’s smile vanished.
His entire body became rigid.
The person did not lower the phone.
Derek took one step forward.
“Hey!”
The figure moved.
Not away.
Toward the lake.
Derek’s eyes widened.
He looked back toward the water.
A faint disturbance moved near the shoreline.
Then toward the figure again.
“Who are you?”
The stranger began running.
Derek’s confidence collapsed.
He stepped backward.
“No.”
The person crossed the lawn faster.
The phone was still recording.
Derek turned as though considering escape.
Then sirens sounded somewhere beyond the mansion gates.
He froze.
The hidden witness had not merely watched.
The witness had already called someone.
Derek stared toward the approaching figure.
And for the first time that day, fear appeared on his face.
May you like
Not fear for Zoey.
Fear for himself.
