Chapter 22 - Renee Lets Go of the HouseRenee surprised everyone by considering selling the mansion.

Not because of fear.

Because the house had become too large.

Too expensive.

Too full of inherited expectations.

Charles had loved it.

Derek had coveted it.

Reporters photographed it.

Renee realized she had never asked whether she wanted it.

Julian said:

“We don’t have to decide now.”

That phrase again.

Choice.

Zoey surprised them.

“I want to stay.”

Renee looked at her.

“Because of Grandpa?”

“No.”

“The lake?”

Zoey shrugged.

“My room.”

Renee laughed.

“Powerful argument.”

“And the tree.”

“What tree?”

“The big one Julian hid behind.”

Julian looked at her.

“You like that tree?”

“Yeah.”

“Why?”

Zoey thought.

“Because someone was there.”

Renee’s throat tightened.

The oak had become the opposite of the lake.

Not danger.

Witness.

Someone saw.

Someone believed.

Someone acted.

Renee understood why Zoey wanted to keep it.

They stayed.

But Renee made the house theirs.

Not Charles’s museum.

Not Derek’s symbol of wealth.

Walls were repainted.

Formal rooms became usable.

The stiff dining room became art and homework space.

Zoey chose a bright yellow chair that Charles would have hated.

Renee bought it immediately.

Julian asked:

“Rebellion?”

“Interior design.”

“Same thing.”

The grounds changed too.

The lake area received better lighting.

Emergency call boxes near the boathouse.

Updated security.

Not because the estate was dangerous.

Because systems should support people.

Zoey knew where cameras were.

No hidden devices.

No secret monitoring.

Transparency.

The oak remained.

Julian’s original phone video stayed sealed in legal archives.

Zoey never watched it.

She asked once:

“Do I need to?”

“No.”

“Ever?”

“No.”

Evidence had done its job.

Zoey did not owe trauma an encore.

Renee kept one photograph from before the lake.

Derek holding baby Zoey.

He looked happy.

For years she considered destroying it.

She didn’t.

At ten, Zoey found it.

“Was he really happy?”

“I think so.”

“Then what happened?”

Renee answered:

“He made choices.”

“That’s it?”

“Over and over.”

Zoey looked at the photograph.

“So people become what they keep choosing?”

Renee smiled sadly.

“That’s one way to say it.”

Zoey put the photo back.

Not displayed.

Not hidden.

May you like

History.

Nothing more.
