Chapter 20 - The Letter Derek SentThe first letter arrived from prison one year after sentencing.

It was addressed to Zoey.
Renee did not open it.
She brought it to the therapist.
Then asked Zoey.
“Derek wrote.”
Zoey’s face changed.
“Do I have to read it?”
“No.”
“Can you?”
“If you want me to.”
Zoey thought.
“Yes.”
Renee read it alone first.
Derek did not ask forgiveness.
That surprised her.
He wrote:
What I did was not because of anything you said, saw, or did.
You did not cause my financial problems.
You did not cause the lake.
You did not betray me by telling the truth.
Renee stopped reading.
Those were the words Zoey needed most.
The letter continued.
Derek acknowledged telling Zoey that Renee would blame her.
He acknowledged manipulating her fear.
He admitted he had used love as pressure.
Then:
I do not expect you to answer. I will not send another letter unless you want one.
Renee brought the letter to Zoey.
She read slowly.
At the end:
“Is that true?”
“What?”
“That he won’t write again?”
“We’ll see.”
Zoey nodded.
Behavior.
Not promises.
She kept the letter.
Months passed.
No second one.
That mattered.
Not enough for trust.
Enough for one data point.
Zoey asked:
“Does respecting one boundary make him good now?”
“No.”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes.”
She frowned.
Renee explained:
“People can improve without us pretending the past disappeared.”
Zoey thought.
“So he can do better and I still don’t have to see him.”
“Exactly.”
“Good.”
Derek’s restraint became the first thing Zoey trusted about him after the lake.
Not because she forgave.
May you like
Because he accepted no contact.
Sometimes change was visible first in what someone stopped demanding.
