Chapter 7 - The VideoJulian’s recording lasted two minutes and forty-eight seconds.

Renee watched only once.

She almost stopped after twelve seconds.

Zoey on the ground.

The chain.

Derek standing over her.

Then the words.

“If you disappear…”

Renee covered her mouth.

Julian reached toward the laptop.

“We can stop.”

“No.”

She kept watching.

Derek’s second threat came.

“And if the grief drives her crazy…”

Renee’s entire body went cold.

Derek had not been speaking only to Zoey.

He had been imagining Renee afterward.

Destroyed.

Alone.

Abandoned.

He wanted to weaponize their daughter’s disappearance against her marriage.

Then came the boulder.

Renee turned away.

She heard the splash.

Could not watch.

When she looked back, Derek was smiling.

That image ended something inside her.

Not love.

Whatever remained of the need to understand him sympathetically.

Then Derek saw Julian.

Fear.

Immediate.

Unmistakable.

Daniel paused the video.

“That reaction matters.”

Renee stared.

“He wasn’t afraid for her.”

“No.”

“He was afraid of the phone.”

“Yes.”

The recording captured more than the act.

It captured motive in fragments.

Control.

Resentment.

Awareness.

Prosecutors would still need evidence of intent.

But Derek’s own words were powerful.

His attorney argued they were hyperbolic threats made during “an emotionally charged disciplinary conflict.”

Renee laughed when Daniel read the filing.

“Discipline?”

“The defense has to characterize it somehow.”

“He chained her to a boulder.”

“I know.”

“Why does legal language make everything sound smaller?”

“Because adjectives are weaker than evidence.”

Daniel pointed to the video.

“That is stronger.”

The full video was not released publicly.

Renee fought to keep it sealed where possible.

Zoey did not need her worst moment circulating online.

Still, details leaked.

Reporters gathered near the mansion gate.

Renee hated them.

Julian handled deliveries so she did not have to pass cameras.

Then one article suggested Julian delayed helping Zoey because he wanted a dramatic recording.

Renee’s anger returned.

“Were you filming too long?”

Julian looked at her.

“No.”

“Would you tell me if you were?”

“Yes.”

“How do I know?”

The question hurt him.

He answered anyway.

“You don’t. You look at the timestamps.”

So they did.

Security data showed Julian called 911 before beginning the video.

The recording started twenty-one seconds before Derek pushed the boulder.

Julian began running immediately afterward.

Seconds.

Terrible seconds.

But not a calculated delay.

Renee apologized.

Julian said:

“Thank you.”

Not “it’s fine.”

It wasn’t.

Trust did not mean never doubting.

It meant checking without punishment.

The video also revealed a detail nobody noticed at first.

Before pushing the boulder, Derek glanced toward the mansion twice.

Not the road.

The mansion.

Investigators examined why.

They discovered one exterior camera covering the lake had been disabled forty minutes earlier.

Its power cable had been removed manually.

Derek knew the estate security layout from his marriage to Renee.

He had intentionally blinded the primary camera.

But he did not know about a new wildlife camera Julian installed near the tree line after deer damaged the landscaping.

The camera did not clearly capture the shoreline.

It did capture Derek walking toward the lake carrying the chain.

And carrying something else.

A small blue pouch.

Police recovered no blue pouch at the scene.

Zoey remembered it.

“Dad put something under the tree.”

“What?” Mara asked.

“I don’t know.”

Investigators searched.

The pouch was found beneath leaves near a different tree.

Inside:

Julian’s missing cufflink.

A pair of disposable gloves.

And an old key card from Julian’s office building.

Derek had not yet planted them all.

He had been preparing the scene.

The frame-up was no longer theoretical.

He planned to leave Julian’s property around the lake.

Then investigators found fingerprints inside the pouch.

Derek’s.

His attorney claimed he had found Julian’s items and intended to return them.

Nobody needed to laugh.

The evidence spoke.

The plan had been interrupted before completion.

That explained inconsistencies.

Derek was not a criminal mastermind.

He was a desperate man trying to make reality match a story he had already written.

And the hidden witness ruined the ending.
