Chapter 15 - AMELIA’S ORIGINAL ACCIDENT REPORTAmelia died on a wet road outside New Haven.

Her car left the lane and struck a barrier.

No other vehicle was identified.

The death was classified as accidental.

The original report contained three missing pages.

A warning light appeared before the crash.

A witness saw Amelia pull into a service area and inspect the car.

She made a phone call.

The call lasted forty-seven seconds.

To Vivian.

Vivian told police Amelia sounded confused and emotional.

The witness described her as frightened.

The vehicle had been serviced the previous day by a contractor connected to the Hartwell payment.

Investigators reopened the case.

The contractor was found living under his middle name in Florida.

He admitted accepting money to falsify parts of a maintenance report.

He denied deliberately causing the crash.

He claimed he was paid to hide a preexisting problem so the vehicle could be sold later without reducing value.

The explanation made little sense.

Amelia had not planned to sell the car.

The contractor’s messages had been deleted.

Old bank data survived.

A second payment was scheduled after Amelia’s death.

Vivian’s company sent it.

Prosecutors could not immediately prove exactly what physical act caused the accident.

They could prove Vivian concealed information afterward and paid someone who altered records.

The distinction mattered legally.

Emotion did not replace evidence.

I wanted a clear answer.

The investigation offered a careful one.

There was substantial evidence that Vivian interfered with the truth surrounding Amelia’s vehicle and death.

Whether she intentionally caused the fatal event required further proof.

Then the recorder from the blue-room box supplied it.

Amelia’s voice filled the police interview room.

“If you are hearing this, Vivian has found me.”

A pause.

“She says Lily belongs to the Hartwell family.”

Another pause.

“She threatened to make sure Daniel could not keep her.”

Amelia inhaled shakily.

“Yesterday, I found Vivian inside my garage.”
