Chapter 5 - THE TICKET TO GENEVAPolice arrived before I finished reading.

Vivian locked herself in the study.

Officers secured the mansion and persuaded her to come out.

She did not resist.

She insisted Lily entered the suitcase voluntarily.

She described the flight as an emergency family trip.

Then police showed her the handwritten message on the photograph.

Vivian stopped speaking.

Paramedics examined Lily.

She was dehydrated and frightened but physically unharmed.

The suitcase had not been fully airtight, and she had been inside for less than an hour.

Less than an hour.

People say such things as reassurance.

When the person inside is six, every minute matters.

The paramedic asked whether Lily felt safe with me.

She climbed into my arms.

That was her answer.

The police separated us for interviews.

A child specialist spoke with Lily in a quiet room.

I remained close enough for her to see me through the open doorway.

The one-way ticket was genuine.

Purchased six days earlier through a private travel service.

Vivian had also hired a car to collect them at a private terminal.

She possessed a signed parental-consent form authorizing international travel.

The signature looked like mine.

I had never seen it.

An officer examined the small travel bag.

Clothes.

Lily’s rabbit.

A toothbrush.

Medication.

And a folder containing translated guardianship documents.

Vivian claimed they were required for extended travel.

The documents named her Lily’s temporary guardian.

One page claimed I had entered a rehabilitation facility.

Another stated I voluntarily surrendered custody.

All false.

The Geneva destination appeared repeatedly.

A Swiss bank.

A law office.

A private boarding school.

Why would a six-year-old need access to a Swiss bank?

I returned to Amelia’s note.

Daniel,

Vivian is not who she says she is. Her real name is Vivian Hartwell. She is my father’s daughter.

My hands went cold.

Amelia had told me she was an only child.

Vivian entered our lives after Amelia’s death, describing herself as an old school friend.

She attended the funeral.

Brought food.

Helped with Lily.

One year later, we married.

She had never mentioned being Amelia’s sister.

The note continued.

If anything happens to me, look for the Hartwell Trust. Lily is the last protected heir.

Do not let Vivian take her to Geneva.

She will tell you she is saving our daughter.

She is saving herself.
