Chapter 11 - Diane Chose a SideRyan stared at the screen.

“My mother?”

Sarah felt nothing.

No surprise.

No heartbreak.

Diane had already spent the entire day choosing herself.

Ethan locked the therapy center.

“Take the boys to the safe room.”

Sarah shook her head.

“No separation.”

“It’s reinforced.”

“Then I go too.”

“Fine.”

Ryan stayed with Ethan.

Before Sarah left, she grabbed his arm.

“Do not protect Diane.”

He looked at her.

“I won’t.”

“Not because she’s your mother.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

His face tightened.

“Yes.”

Sarah nodded once.

Then took both boys.

Noah held her hand.

Lucas held Noah’s.

The sight nearly broke her again.

Outside, Diane approached the front entrance.

Vale walked beside her.

He looked ordinary.

That disturbed Sarah most.

Sixties.

Gray hair.

Glasses.

Expensive coat.

A man who could sit beside you on an airplane and discuss weather.

Not someone who manipulated births.

The intercom clicked.

Diane spoke.

“Ryan.”

He answered from inside.

“What are you doing?”

“Open the door.”

“No.”

“Vale wants the boys.”

Ryan’s face changed.

Ethan whispered, “She admitted it.”

Diane continued.

“If you give him Noah, he leaves Lucas.”

Silence.

Sarah heard through the safe-room monitor.

Her blood went cold.

Ryan’s voice shook.

“You traded my son?”

“Noah isn’t biologically yours.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

There.

The truth.

Diane had never seen Noah as family.

Not really.

Ryan whispered:

“He is my son.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Lucas is yours.”

“So is Noah.”

Diane laughed bitterly.

“You don’t even know what you’re saying.”

Ryan looked toward the safe-room camera.

Maybe he knew Sarah was watching.

He said:

“I know exactly what I’m saying.”

Diane’s face tightened.

Ryan continued.

“Noah reaches for me when he’s scared.”

“He waits by the window when I come home.”

“He sleeps with the stupid dinosaur I bought him.”

“He is my son.”

Sarah covered her mouth.

Ryan’s eyes filled.

“And Lucas is my son too.”

Diane stared at him.

Ryan said:

“You taught me blood was everything.”

“You were wrong.”

For the first time, Sarah saw something in him she hadn’t seen all day.

A man separating himself from his mother.

Vale stepped toward the intercom.

“Emotional speeches won’t change biology.”

Ryan looked at him.

“No.”

“But prison might change your schedule.”

Vale smiled.

“You think you have enough evidence?”

Ethan held up the trust files.

“We have more than you think.”

Vale’s smile disappeared.

Diane looked at Ethan.

“You.”

“Hello, Diane.”

“You ruined this family.”

Ethan laughed.

“You spent thirty years pretending I wasn’t part of it.”

Vale looked at Diane.

“Open the side gate.”

Ryan froze.

Diane had access.

She entered a code.

The gate clicked.

Ethan cursed.

“Security override.”

Ryan looked at him.

“Where?”

“Basement.”

“No.”

Sarah heard everything.

Basement.

A place Noah hated.

Why?

Ethan looked at the camera.

“Vale is coming for the backup server.”

“What server?”

“All fertility-program evidence.”

Sarah realized the therapy center was not only a refuge.

It was an archive.

Ethan had spent years collecting proof.

Vale had not come primarily for Noah.

He came for the evidence.

Sarah opened the safe-room door.

Ethan turned.

“What are you doing?”

“Use the boys as bait?”

“No.”

“You just said he wants the server.”

“Yes.”

“So get the evidence out.”

Ryan looked at Sarah.

“Stay with the boys.”

She shook her head.

“You stay.”

“Sarah—”

“You hit me without asking one question.”

Ryan flinched.

“You deleted evidence.”

His jaw tightened.

“You owe Noah protection more than you owe me.”

He nodded.

No argument.

Sarah looked at Ethan.

“Show me the server.”

They went downstairs.

Vale entered through the side hall.

Diane with him.

Sarah reached the archive room first.

Rows of hard drives.

Paper files.

Photographs.

Dozens of names.

Hundreds.

Maybe thousands.

Mothers.

Children.

Families.

Ethan started copying the master index to encrypted drives.

Sarah scanned the shelves.

Then stopped.

WHITAKER, SARAH — CASE 0417.

Her hands shook.

She opened it.

Embryo records.

Consent forms.

Forged signatures.

Ethan’s sample.

Ryan’s sample.

Then one more document.

ORDERING PARTY.

Sarah stared.

Not Charles.

Not Diane.

Not Ethan.

The name was:

RYAN WHITAKER.

She stopped breathing.

Ethan looked over.

His face drained.

“No.”

Sarah stared at the signature.

Ryan’s signature.

Authorization for experimental fertilization.

Dated five years earlier.

Before Noah and Lucas were conceived.

Sarah felt physically cold.

“He knew.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Maybe forged.”

Sarah turned the page.

Video-consent reference.

A file number.

Ethan searched the server.

Found it.

Video loaded.

Ryan appeared.

Younger.

Nervous.

Sitting inside Dr. Vale’s office.

Vale asked:

“You understand the experimental procedure may use alternate paternal material if necessary?”

Ryan answered:

“Yes.”

Sarah’s heart shattered.

Vale continued:

“And your wife is not aware of this condition?”

Ryan looked down.

“No.”

“Do you consent?”

Long pause.

Then Ryan said:

“Yes.”

Sarah stared at the screen.

Footsteps came down the basement stairs.

Diane.

Vale.

And from behind Sarah—

Ryan’s voice.

“Sarah.”

She slowly turned.

He had followed her.

He saw the screen.

His face went white.

May you like

Sarah whispered:

“You knew from the beginning.”
