Chapter 12 - Ryan’s Choice“I can explain.”

Sarah laughed.
It sounded broken.
“Of course you can.”
Ryan stepped closer.
She backed away.
“No.”
“Sarah.”
“You agreed to let them use another man’s genetic material.”
“I agreed to a backup procedure.”
“Without telling me.”
“Yes.”
“You let me sign fertility consent forms that weren’t complete.”
“I didn’t know Vale would actually do it.”
“You gave him permission.”
Ryan’s eyes filled.
“We had failed three cycles.”
“So?”
“You were falling apart.”
Sarah stared.
“That was my body.”
“I know.”
“My pregnancy.”
“I know.”
“My children.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Her voice sharpened.
“You know now.”
Ryan looked toward the screen.
“I thought it meant donor sperm if mine failed.”
Sarah pointed at Ethan.
“From your brother?”
“I didn’t know Ethan existed.”
That was true.
“What did your father tell you?”
Ryan closed his eyes.
“That he could guarantee a viable embryo.”
“And you believed him.”
“Yes.”
“Why keep it from me?”
“I was afraid you’d say no.”
Silence.
There it was.
Not protection.
Control.
Sarah whispered:
“So you took away my chance to say no.”
Ryan cried then.
Quietly.
No performance.
“I’m sorry.”
Sarah stared.
She believed he was sorry.
It did not fix anything.
Behind them, Vale entered the archive.
Diane followed.
Vale looked at the screen.
Then smiled.
“Family honesty. Finally.”
Ethan moved in front of the server.
Vale pulled a small device from his pocket.
Ryan stiffened.
“What is that?”
“Remote wipe trigger.”
Ethan cursed.
Vale lifted it.
“One press.”
Sarah looked at the shelves.
“All evidence?”
“The digital archive.”
“What about paper?”
Vale smiled.
“Fire solves paper.”
Diane stared at him.
“You said no one gets hurt.”
Vale looked at her.
“People always say that after they choose a criminal.”
Diane’s face changed.
For the first time, she understood.
Vale had never considered her a partner.
Only useful.
Ryan stepped forward.
“Put it down.”
Vale laughed.
“You’re in no position to command anyone.”
Sarah looked at Diane.
“You brought him here.”
Diane whispered, “I thought he would take Noah and leave.”
Sarah stared.
“You thought trading a four-year-old child was acceptable.”
Diane’s eyes filled.
“He’s not—”
Sarah cut her off.
“Finish that sentence.”
Diane stopped.
Sarah’s voice became ice.
“Say he’s not Ryan’s.”
“Say he’s not yours.”
“Say blood makes it easier to hand him to a man who used babies like lab samples.”
Diane looked away.
Sarah nodded.
“That’s what I thought.”
Vale pressed the trigger.
Nothing happened.
He frowned.
Ethan smiled.
“I moved the archive offline six months ago.”
Vale’s face hardened.
“You’re bluffing.”
“No.”
Then alarms sounded upstairs.
Sarah looked at Ethan.
“What?”
He smiled.
“I also called federal investigators when your SUV hit the gate.”
Vale turned toward the stairs.
Too late.
Ryan moved.
He knocked the device from Vale’s hand.
Ethan grabbed his arm.
There was a brief struggle.
No gun.
No dramatic fight.
Just two men trying to restrain a desperate older man.
Vale shouted:
“You have no idea who financed this!”
Sarah froze.
Ethan did too.
Vale saw it.
He smiled.
“You think Charles built the program?”
Ryan held him against the wall.
“Shut up.”
Vale laughed.
“Charles tried to stop it.”
Diane whispered, “What?”
Vale looked at her.
“You really never knew.”
Diane’s face drained.
Vale continued:
“The Whitaker Foundation was only a shell.”
Ethan stared.
“For who?”
Vale looked at Sarah.
“People who paid a fortune to create heirs without public scandal.”
Sarah felt sick.
“Names.”
Vale smiled.
“You’ll find them in the missing ledger.”
Ethan frowned.
“What ledger?”
“The one Charles took when he faked his death.”
Ryan stared.
“Where is it?”
Vale looked at Noah’s file in Sarah’s hands.
“Ask the child.”
Sarah went still.
“What?”
Vale smiled.
“Charles hid everything in front of Noah because he knew adults would search papers.”
Sarah remembered Noah pointing at the ring.
The lockbox.
The dog run.
Vale continued:
“But Noah remembers patterns.”
Sarah’s heart jumped.
Vale knew Noah’s abilities.
“He may not speak.”
Vale’s voice became quieter.
“But that boy remembers everything.”
Federal agents entered.
Vale was restrained.
Diane sat against the wall.
Defeated.
Ryan looked at Sarah.
She did not look back.
Then Ethan’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What?”
He turned toward Sarah.
“The safe room.”
Her stomach dropped.
“What about it?”
“The boys are gone.”
Sarah ran upstairs.
Empty room.
Noah’s toy car on the floor.
Lucas’s blue sweater.
The rear safety window open.
Sarah felt panic tear through her.
Then she saw something on the glass.
A small handprint.
And beneath it—
Noah had used a marker to draw one symbol.
A circle.
With a line through it.
Ethan froze.
“I know that symbol.”
Sarah turned.
“What is it?”
Ethan’s face went white.
“Charles used it on his private vehicles.”
May you like
Ryan stared.
“My father took them.”
