Chapter 13 - The Dead GrandfatherCharles called thirty minutes later.

Not Ryan.

Sarah.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Where are my children?”

His voice was calm.

“They’re safe.”

Sarah’s whole body shook.

“If you touch them—”

“I would never hurt them.”

“You took them.”

“I removed them.”

“That is kidnapping.”

“I know.”

Sarah stopped.

He wasn’t pretending.

“Why?”

“Because Vale isn’t the top.”

“Then tell the FBI.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because the FBI has people on the ledger.”

Sarah felt cold.

Ryan stood beside her.

Ethan listened.

Charles continued:

“Noah remembers where I hid the original.”

Sarah looked at the drawing.

“You used him.”

“No.”

“You turned a toddler into a map.”

“I made sure someone innocent could lead you if I died.”

“You let everyone believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“You let Diane control this house.”

“Yes.”

“You let your son live inside lies.”

“Yes.”

Sarah hated how easily he admitted it.

“Where are Noah and Lucas?”

“With me.”

“I want to hear them.”

A rustle.

Then Lucas:

“Mom?”

Sarah’s knees nearly gave out.

“I’m here.”

“Grandpa says you’re coming.”

Sarah froze.

Grandpa.

Charles had already told him.

Then Noah made a small sound in the background.

“Mm.”

Sarah cried.

“Baby.”

He tapped something three times near the phone.

Their routine.

Sarah tapped three times against her own phone.

“I’m coming.”

Charles returned.

“Come alone.”

Ryan shook his head.

Sarah said, “No.”

“Sarah.”

“You lost the right to give orders when you stole my children.”

Pause.

Then Charles said:

“Bring Ryan.”

Ryan looked surprised.

“Not Ethan.”

Ethan’s face tightened.

“Why?”

Charles heard.

“Because Ethan still doesn’t know what his mother did.”

Silence.

Ethan whispered, “My mother?”

Charles ended the call.

The location arrived.

An abandoned lakeside house.

Whitaker property purchased under a shell company.

Federal investigators wanted to storm it.

Sarah refused immediate entry.

Two children were inside.

They approached with surveillance.

Sarah and Ryan went to the door.

Charles opened it.

Alive.

No disguise now.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

No rich-man posture.

Just an old man who had spent years hiding.

Ryan stared at his father.

“I buried you.”

Charles’s expression broke.

“I know.”

Ryan slapped him.

Hard.

Sarah said nothing.

Charles accepted it.

“I deserved that.”

Ryan’s eyes filled.

“You watched us mourn you.”

“Yes.”

“You let Mom become worse.”

“I underestimated her.”

“You underestimate everyone.”

Charles looked toward Sarah.

“That sounds familiar.”

She did not smile.

“Where are the boys?”

“In the den.”

They ran.

Noah saw Sarah and immediately rushed into her arms.

Lucas followed more cautiously.

Ryan knelt.

Lucas looked at him.

“You’re my dad?”

Ryan nodded through tears.

“Yes.”

Lucas glanced at Noah.

“His too?”

Ryan answered:

“Yes.”

Sarah looked at him.

A tiny moment.

Not forgiveness.

But something.

They returned to Charles.

“Ledger,” Sarah said.

Charles looked at Noah.

Noah was holding a small wooden shape.

A circle crossed by a line.

Charles crouched.

“Can you show Mom?”

Noah nodded.

He walked toward the fireplace.

Touched three stones.

Left.

Right.

Middle.

Charles pushed.

A hidden panel opened.

Inside sat a black ledger.

Sarah stared.

“He remembered that from three years ago?”

Charles nodded.

“He remembers visual sequences unusually well.”

Sarah’s eyes narrowed.

“You studied him.”

“No.”

“You knew.”

“I paid attention.”

That distinction mattered.

Maybe.

Ryan picked up the ledger.

Names.

Payments.

Clinics.

Donor codes.

Politicians.

Judges.

Doctors.

Executives.

Then Ryan stopped.

“What is this?”

Sarah looked.

Program Director:

D. Whitaker.

Ryan stared at his father.

“Diane?”

Charles shook his head.

“No.”

Ryan frowned.

“Then who?”

Charles looked at Ethan’s name on Sarah’s phone.

“D stands for David.”

Silence.

Ryan whispered:

“Who is David Whitaker?”

Charles’s face changed.

“My brother.”

Another hidden relative.

Sarah almost laughed.

“Is anyone in this family actually dead?”

Charles did not.

“David founded the program.”

Ryan stared.

“You told us you were an only child.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because David became dangerous.”

Sarah looked at the ledger.

“Where is he?”

Charles looked at her.

“Close.”

“How close?”

Charles’s voice dropped.

“He has been using another name for twenty-five years.”

Sarah felt dread.

“What name?”

Charles looked directly at her.

“Martin Vale.”

Silence.

Ryan whispered:

“Vale is your brother?”

Charles nodded.

“My older brother.”

Sarah’s stomach turned.

Which meant the man who manipulated her embryos—

was Ryan’s great-uncle.

Charles continued:

“And Ethan’s mother…”

He looked toward the door.

“…was David’s daughter.”

Sarah froze.

Ethan wasn’t only Ryan’s half-brother.

Their family tree had been deliberately twisted into the program itself.

Then a gunshot cracked outside.

Everyone dropped.

No one inside had fired.

Charles looked toward the window.

His face went pale.

“They found us.”

Ryan grabbed the boys.

Sarah pulled them low.

Another shot struck the wooden frame.

Charles whispered:

“David isn’t in federal custody.”

Sarah stared.

“What?”

“He planned the arrest.”

Then she understood.

Vale had wanted them to find Charles.

The ledger.

The boys.

Everything.

Charles looked toward the rear door.

“He never came for Noah.”

May you like

Sarah felt cold.

“He came for the ledger.”
